Mathematics is the abstract science which uses deductive reasoning to study numerical, structural and spatial relations. Through the use of abstraction and logic, mathematics developed from counting, calculation, measurement and the systematic study of the shapes and motions of physical objects. It is an age-old tradition, which underpins the very rudiments of society and life as we know it. It has shaped and benefited humanity immensely, and continues to help us understand the universe and bring about social and technological progress.
The mathematics department at the UGR is one of the most prestigious in Spain and in Europe. Indeed, the UGR is currently ranked among the top 100-150 universities in the world in mathematics (Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities or ARWU 2015).
Research in mathematics at the UGR surpasses that of any other Spanish university, both in production and in citations. Our undergraduate degree therefore opens up a world of opportunities. Upon successful completion of our degree, you can then go on to pursue a prestigious postgraduate programme.
During your first year as a student on our degree, you will be taught the basics in mathematics, physics and information and communication technology. Obligatory course subjects will provide you with a solid grounding in areas such as calculus, algebra, mathematical analysis, geometry, statistics, numerical analysis, logic, differential equations, topology, probability and complex analysis. Elective subjects will allow you to specialise in areas such as algebra, variables, analytical methods, mechanics, geometry, equations or cryptography.
Our graduates enjoy a high employability rate, and go on to work in a number of different areas, including banking, finance, insurance, consultancy firms, science, education, research, public administration and the industrial sector. Mathematicians are versatile in the job market and are highly sought-after due to their excellent analytical and quantitative skills, their ability for logical reasoning, flexible and abstract thinking and, above all, their ability for problem solving.
Aside from practical considerations, mathematics is an exciting and challenging discipline that continues to develop and evolve. Applying mathematics to resolve real-world problems can be hugely satisfying. You could be part of developing a new branch of mathematics, or finding a practical purpose for an abstract theory.
