The European project entitled ‘Strengthening Teaching Competences in Higher Education in Natural and Mathematical Sciences-TeComp’ was recently approved within the framework of the Erasmus+ programme. It aims to enhance the teaching skills of academic staff working in the fields of mathematics and sciences at numerous universities in Serbia and Albania. UGR teachers María C. Cañadas and Antonio Moreno, both of whom work at the Department of Didactics of Mathematics, are participating in this highly innovative project.
The project launch meeting took place between 15 and 17 January 2019 in Niš (Serbia). Teaching staff from the partner universities in Serbia, Albania, Slovakia, Belgium, Czech Republic and Spain all took part in the kick-off event. The objective of this first meeting was to lay the essential groundwork for the project and establish the definitive schedule.
Representatives from each university had the opportunity to deliver presentations on their institution, detailing their respective strengths and explaining how they would contribute to the project.
In his presentation, UGR lecturer Antonio Moreno highlighted the significant strides made by the UGR in the area of internationalization initiatives over recent years. With regard to the TeComp project, he focused on the following areas:
- the development of courses comprising theory and practice-based components at the Faculty of Education;
- initiatives undertaken by the Department of Didactics of Mathematics in collaboration with the UGR’s Resource Production Centre for the Digital University (CEPRUD), drawing on the University of Granada’s Master's Degree in Didactics of Mathematics, which is delivered through face-to-face and online lectures, as a practical case study;
- the design and development of massive online open courses (MOOCs) — an area in which the participating UGR lecturers have ample experience;
- the introductory course on university teaching and mentoring organised by the UGR’s Quality, Innovation and Planning Unit, which is aimed at new academic staff
The UGR is currently participating in nine Erasmus+ KA2 ‘Capacity Building’ projects launched between 2016 and 2018. As well as participating in the TeComp project, the UGR is implementing 4 other projects from among the 147 that were approved for funding in the 2018 call for applications, and is acting as the coordinator of one of these projects.
