CERN to develop its future research lines at symposium organised by UGR

The particle collider at CERN


Granada will play host to the international Open Symposium of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in May 2019. The symposium is held every 7 years with a view to debating and charting out CERN’s future research lines and priorities in the field of elementary particle physics. The event will take place from 13 to 16 May 2019, bringing together over 500 of the most talented and renowned physicists on the globe, especially those with expertise in high-energy physics.

The University of Granada, and particularly the Department of Theoretical Physics and Cosmology (UGR), will coordinate the event, following Spain’s successful bid to host this prestigious international meeting. The wider theoretical physics community in Spain will also become involved in the organisation of the symposium, mainly through the participation of the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities; the “Severo Ochoa” and “María de Maeztu” Centres of Excellence, and the ALBA Synchrotron.

The overall objective of the symposium is to coordinate international research into particle physics, with leading experts from Europe and beyond coming together to reflect on the long-term goals of CERN. The CERN Council will analyse the contributions made by the Member States and the overall findings from the symposium, using them to produce a draft of the next European Strategy for Particle Physics.

The CERN Council will publish the updated European Strategy for Particle Physics in May 2020, shedding light on the most pressing issues and most crucial research lines in the field. It will establish CERN’s agenda for the ensuing seven years.

The last Open Symposium was held in Krakow (Poland) in 2012 and provided a forum for reflection on the future of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) – the world’s most powerful particle accelerator, as well as on the implications of the discovery of the Higgs boson elementary particle.
