       Systemic grammar es fundamentalmente un intento de extender las teorías de Firth en relación con el principio de "meaning-as-choice" a unas areas de la descripción ligüística que no fueron tratadas sistemáticamente por el propio Firth. De aquí que para conocer mejor cuáles han sido los frutos de la semilla que Firth dejó es imprescindible un conocimiento de esta escuela lingüística moderna.
