The UGRQR mobile application was presented at the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting on the 6 April. This inclusive and accessible app makes it possible for those with disabilities to navigate more effectively around the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting and the School of Computer and Telecommunication Engineering, both of which have jointly coordinated the project. The app lets users find and identify the different spaces that make up these buildings, guiding them around and providing them with practical information along the way.
Thanks to its accessible nature, UGRQR can be employed by anyone. It enables users to discover every part of these educational centres, regardless of their technical, cognitive and physical abilities.
Moreover, the app is available for Android in five languages (Spanish, English, Italian, German and Arabic) and in three formats (text, audio guide and sign language). Users can directly access information through the app’s menu, scanning QR codes located at different points around the faculties or by using a beacon system that automatically activates the application when it is in range.
The UGRQR app has been developed within the framework of the DESAM Teaching Innovation Project, which is managed by the TRACCE Research Group, in collaboration with the Department of Translation and Interpreting and the Department of Software Engineering (UGR).
Cristina Álvarez de Morales Mercado and María José Rodríguez Fortiz, coordinators of the project, explain that: “The future objectives of this project are to increase the number of accessible UGR buildings on the UGRQR app, to make it available in more languages, and to create an iOS version”.
The Rector’s Delegate for the Digital University, Óscar Cordón García, emphasises that: “This work goes beyond a conventional teaching innovation project and has become a multidisciplinary and comprehensive collaborative project developed by teachers, students, administrative and support staff and those managing the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting and the School of Computer and Telecommunication Engineering”.
The presentation event was chaired by distinguished UGR staff members such as Óscar Cordón García, the Rector’s delegate for the Digital University; Cristina Álvarez de Morales Mercado and María José Rodríguez Fortiz, coordinators of the project and lecturers from the Department of Translation and Interpreting and the Department of Software Engineering, respectively; Enrique Quero Gervilla, Dean of the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting and Francisco García Rioz, Deputy-Director of the School of Computer and Telecommunication Engineering (Internationalization).
