The University of Granada spearheads the advancement of Spanish as a language of science

The UGR presents the ‘Granada Declaration’ at the assemblies of La Rábida Group of Ibero-American Universities and the Ibero-American University Association for Postgraduate Studies (AUIP) in Paraguay

The University of Granada (UGR) has stepped up its efforts to promote Spanish as part of its international academic agenda, thanks to its participation in the annual assemblies of La Rábida Group of Ibero-American Universities and the Ibero-American University Association for Postgraduate Studies. At the conferences, held in the city of Asunción between 11 and 13 March, the UGR’s main focus was to promote the Granada Declaration on the Development, Communication and Dissemination of Science in Spanish.

Drawn up in November 2025 in line with the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science, the Declaration aims to ensure that scientific progress is a collective right based on respect for cultural and linguistic diversity. During the conferences in Asunción, the UGR set up information stands to encourage Ibero-American universities to endorse the Declaration.

The primary goal of this initiative is to promote action plans that include developing AI in Spanish, creating standardised scientific terminology, and engaging in discussions with evaluation agencies to ensure that the use of academic Spanish is not penalised in research careers.

Institutional participation in governing bodies

The UGR delegation, led in the main meetings by its Rector, Pedro Mercado Pacheco, harnessed these forums to consolidate strategic alliances.

At the General Assembly of La Rábida Group, held at the Autonomous University of Asunción, the UGR was represented by its Vice-Rector for Internationalization, Inmaculada Marrero Rocha, and its Director for Language Services and Resources, Silvia Montero Martínez.

At the AUIP Executive Committee meeting, held at the National University of Asunción, Inmaculada Marrero helped define the association's lines of action. The Rector, Pedro Mercado Pacheco, together with the Vice-Rector and the Director for Language Services, also participated in the General Assembly, with the aim of reaffirming the UGR’s commitment to the Ibero-American Knowledge Space (EIC).
