Undergraduate Degree in Primary Education (Bilingual, English and Spanish)

Children in Spain start compulsory education at 6, which they must continue until the age of 16. Primary school teachers specialise in equipping children from ages six to twelve with the fundamental knowledge and skills necessary to give them a good start in life.

As in pre-school education, the main focus of primary education is to focus on giving children the necessary tools to gain an understanding of the world, while allowing them to develop their social, interpersonal, intellectual, creative, and physical skills.

Our Degree in Primary Education prepares our students for all the demands of becoming a primary education teacher. As well as exploring and analysing the core contents currently employed in the field, they are also trained in practical teaching methods and theoretical concepts. They are also trained to teach using two languages (Spanish, and either English or French), as bilingual state schools are now being introduced throughout Spain.

The Education Sciences Faculty brings together all of the education degrees on offer at the UGR. Its library boasts a wealth of resources available to students during their studies. Our teaching staff are also highly qualified, and have a great deal of experience training primary education teachers.

This four-year Degree is comprised of four learning stages: basic subjects, core subjects, a compulsory 44-credit internship programme in other primary education centres, and elective subjects. In their fourth year, students have to choose between six specialisations: music, physical education, English, French, special education and basic studies. Subjects include contents in knowledge areas such as teaching theories, developmental psychology, teaching Spanish language and literature, history of education, mathematics teaching, social sciences teaching, music, and literature.

This Degree is a necessary step to become a professional primary education teacher. Upon completion of the course, our graduates have the opportunity to work as teachers in state and private schools, tutoring centres, prisons, sociocultural centres and NGOs.

Primary education is the first phase of compulsory education in Spain. It is vital for children, as it gives them the necessary tools and knowledge to become independent and capable adults, while preparing them for the next phases in their personal and professional development. By choosing this degree, you can begin one of the most dynamic, fulfilling, and important careers in contemporary society.
