On 27 September 2019, European Researchers’ Night—an event coordinated by the European Commission—will bring together over 2,000 researchers from 8 Andalusian cities to undertake over 500 fascinating activities throughout the region. This year, the event will take place in over 370 cities in 30 countries.
European Researchers’ Night, which takes place annually and is now in its 8th year in Andalusia, is dedicated to celebrating popular science, fun learning, and to bringing researchers and society closer together. It gives you the chance to meet the heroes of science; the researchers from diverse disciplines whose extraordinary work can change our lives.
This year’s programme encompasses hands-on experiments, practical workshops, science exhibitions, guided tours, live performances, and awe-inspiring educational workshops for children. The activities are billed as family-friendly and interactive, open to everyone, and are aimed at those of all ages.
European Researchers’ Night in Andalusia (27 Sept 2019)
In Andalusia, European Researchers' Night will once again be celebrated under the slogan “Women and men who conduct research for you (“Mujeres y hombres que hacen ciencia para ti”), with over 2,000 researchers from 13 institutions taking part throughout the region. They will take to the streets and squares of 8 Andalusian cities, offering a total of over 500 activities, all of which are designed to enhance public engagement with science.
All scientific fields and disciplines will be represented at the event, which will cover a broad range of topics, including the use of radiocarbon dating to prevent ivory trafficking, 5G communications and artificial intelligence, and an educational talk on swallows. Diverse topics from biology, biomedicine, agriculture and literature will also feature as part of European Researchers’ Night 2019.
Moreover, to mark the European Week of Sport 2019, an array of activities will be held to promote the value of sports from a scientific perspective, including a talk titled ‘Exercise is medicine’, as well as others aimed at raising awareness about Paralympic sports.

Under the coordination of the "Fundación Descubre" Andalusian Foundation for the Dissemination of Knowledge and Innovation, representatives from the following bodies and organisations will take part in the event: Regional Ministry of Economy, Knowledge, Business and Universities; nine Andalusian universities (Almería, Cádiz, Córdoba, Granada, Huelva, Jaén, Málaga, Pablo de Olavide and Sevilla); Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) centres, including La Casa de la Ciencia de Sevilla, Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia (IAA-CSIC), Zaidín Experimental Station (EEZ), Institute for Advanced Social Studies, School of Arabic Studies (EEA), “López-Neyra” Institute of Parasitology y Biomedicine, “Progreso y Salud” Public Foundation and the IMGEMA-Royal Botanical Gardens of Córdoba.

European Researcher’s Night is a European scientific dissemination project coordinated by the European Commission within the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Horizon 2020 programme and has taken place simultaneously in 370 European cities every year since 2005.
