The International Day for Monuments and Sites (also known as World Heritage Day) is celebrated annually across the globe on 18 April, with a view to fostering awareness about humanity’s immensely vast and diverse cultural heritage. A further aim is to raise greater awareness of the vulnerability of sites and monuments and the measures needed to protect and conserve them.

To support this initiative at a societal level and promote its own unique cultural heritage, the University of Granada has organised four guided tours of the University’s spaces and monuments, through its Secretariat for Cultural Property. The tour, which is free and open to members of the public and the University community alike, will give participants the opportunity to visit and learn about fascinating UGR heritage sites such as the School of Architecture, Corrala de Santiago Visitors Residence, Modern Languages Centre (CLM), Botanical Garden of the University of Granada, Condes de la Jarosa Palace (which currently houses the International School for Postgraduate Studies) and the Granada Charterhouse (a Carthusian monastery).

The International Day for Monuments and Sites was originally proposed by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) in 1982 and was subsequently approved by the General Assembly of UNESCO. This year, the theme is Heritage for Generations.

The UGR activities will take place within the framework of a jointly coordinated project between Granada City Hall, the Alhambra and Generalife Foundation, the Rodriguez-Acosta Foundation, and the High Court of Andalusia (TSJA), among others.
