The seminar on Political Islam in Europe, which will be held from 23 to 27 April 2018, is part of a cycle of seminars organised by the Euro-Arab Foundation for Higher Studies through its Chair in Studies of Islamic Civilisation and Renewal of Religious Thought. The cycle, consisting of five seminars that are being held from February to May, will address topics relating to Salafism, Islamic feminism, new religions, political Islam in Europe and postcolonial studies.

The ‘Political Islam in Europe’ seminar will focus on the history of migration, exile, the creation of networks, proselytism and the strategies that give visibility to Islamic movements in Europe. Likewise, it will offer some keys to understand the political mobilisation of Muslim identity in Europe and its relation to national and transnational dynamics, both within the European context, and outside Europe with regard to Islamic movements in predominantly Muslim countries. The seminar will also focus on Spain as a case study.

The topics to be addressed in the seminar are the following:

  1. Europe as a land of exile and proselytism: the creation of transnational networks.
  2. The recognition of Islam as a minority in European countries: national models.
  3. Debates on Islamic authority: the case of the European Council for Fatwa and Research (ECFR).
  4. The Muslim Brotherhood as an organisational model and other movements based in Europe.
  5. The history of Islamic movements in Europe.
