The final of the 3 Minute Thesis competition will be held today, 19 March 2018 at the University of Granada and will be chaired by the Rector, Pilar Aranda. Eight doctoral candidates will present their thesis topics and results in a highly succinct and engaging format in just three minutes, in English, and using just one PowerPoint slide. They will compete against one another with a view to becoming one of the finalists to go through to the international finals, which will be held in Salamanca in July 2018.

The 3 Minute Thesis competition was originally developed by the University of Queensland, Australia, and thanks to its considerable success there it has since spread to far-flung corners of the world. Its overarching objective is to foster the development of innovative scientific communication skills among young researchers by challenging them to create dynamic and accessible bite-sized talks on their thesis topics.

The following UGR doctoral candidates will compete against one another on Monday 19 March:

  • Cristina Cadenas (Doctoral Programme in Biomedicine): ‘I have a present for you’

  • Naomi Cano (Doctoral Programme in Clinical Medicine and Public Health): ‘Food is not a fairy tale for kids!’

  • Jairo Hidalgo (Doctoral Programme in Biomedicine): ‘Every minute counts’

  • Rocío Martínez (Doctoral Programme in Biomedicine): ‘A secret weapon’

  • Daniel Molina (Doctoral Programme in Biomedicine): ‘Stranger things’

  • José Rafael Mora (Doctoral Programme in Biomedicine): ‘Fiction or reality?’

  • Mayka Telga (Doctoral Programme in Psychology): ‘A common mistake’

  • Ana Valverde (Doctoral Programme in Legal Sciences): ‘46’

At the UGR, the 3 Minute Thesis competition is organised by the International School for Postgraduate Studies, in collaboration with the Doctoral Studies Group of the Coimbra Group and the Communications Management Office (OGC) of the UGR. The jury is composed of three members who are specialists in communication; José Ángel Ibáñez, Director of the Communications Management Office (OGC); Ana Crespo, Professor of Geodynamics at the UGR and Director for Research at the “Parque de las Ciencias” Science Museum; and Diego García, the editor of the Canal Sur television programme Con Ciencia. Also present at Monday’s final will be María López Jurado, Vice-Rector for Teaching and Learning; Dorothy Kelly, former Chairperson of the Executive Board of the Coimbra Group and current Vice-Rector for Internationalization; and Teresa Bajo, the Director of the International School for Postgraduate Studies.

The competition is conducted in English and enables candidates to strengthen their research profiles, improve their communication skills, and network with other international researchers.

With a view to helping the doctoral candidates to prepare their talks, the International School for Postgraduate Studies and the Communications Management Office also organised a month-long communication workshop in the run-up to the competition.
