The contemporary city: spaces and places from a gender perspective
(Juan Manuel Barrios Rozúa, Carlos Hernández Pezzi, Carmen Gregorio Gil)

By studying documentary sources we aim to analyse certain aspects of 19th Century architecture such as the use of spaces in the home and the distribution of space in projects for new houses or buildings. We also explore issues such as the visualization of women as patrons (buildings commissioned or refurbished by women). Another important aspect that must be borne in mind is religion and the Christian home (catholic conceptions about women's role in society) and contrary attitudes against the Christian home (project for a familistère and the first worker-inspired social housing projects), in this subject we are researching in Granada (1835-1898) .In the case of the contemporary city we aim to cover two aspects. We will begin by analysing the dialectics between dwellings and public space in contemporary architecture and housing in relation to the experiences and projects which take into account in a significant way the equality of uses of the city and the opportunities for using space, especially from a gender perspective, but without forgetting that of minority groups. Our aim is to identify policies to combat exclusion in our cities and town-planning and architectural practices of interest because of the possibility they offer of egalitarian use of the space-time of the city through architecture, public participation in urban governability and the sustainability and restoration of the common space that we all share, of mobility and social energy. For this reason our work will focus on the analysis of public housing and the social construction of the city in Andalusia from 1950 to the present, making use of the different projects that have been enacted and the town-planning strategies and of the different reports, guides and indicators relating to the construction of shared space in Andalusia. We will also be looking at the constructed memory of the city in the sense that the city is a constructed object in which we can see how human relations are established. The relation between the spaces, the street-names and even the urban art (statues in squares, graffiti.....) are all part of the memory of the city that is constructed over time. The images in our streets often tell a story in which women remain invisible, although numerous ideas are being put forward to correct this discrimination.
