Architecture of the mendicant orders in Andalusia from a gender perspective
(Felipe Serrano Estrella)

This line of research centres on the Early Modern Age and analyses the architecture of the mendicant orders from a gender perspective. Gender differences were a constant feature of both architecture and town-planning, and there was a strong female presence not only in female monasteries but also in the artistic and architectural development of convents inhabited by friars, in which they acted as patrons or benefactors. We shall be centring our attention on the two realities of convents for friars and monasteries for nuns. An exhaustive analysis has already been performed in the case of Jaén and we are now making a comparative analysis for Cordoba, Granada, Malaga and Almeria, cities in which it is necessary to make a far-reaching historiographical review of the publications made in recent years. This is particularly true of the references to Cordoba and Malaga of which a general overall view has been gained, something that is lacking in studies of the Granada and Almeria areas, which tend to focus on specific monastic communities.
