Occupation of space from a gender perspective in recent prehistory
(Margarita Sánchez Romero)

The study of the internal distribution of dwelling structures and how they were organized in the settlements in the recent prehistory of Andalusia will give us a deeper insight into aspects related to and indicative of people's perceptions when it came to arranging their living spaces in practical and symbolic terms. There have traditionally been a number of negative discourses about the characteristics, importance and capacity to offer information of prehistoric domestic spaces and of the alleged lack of public interest. However, from our perspective, the ability of communities to survive and thrive over time depends to a large extent on biological reproduction and on the practice of a series of activities and processes that collectively facilitate the continuation and survival of these societies and which take place within the framework of everyday life in these domestic spaces. In addition to these practical aspects, the domestic space is also a reflection of the way in which different communities understand the world in which they live, and in particular the relations between the genders. We will be analysing specific cases of organization of domestic space and time from a gender perspective and how this is reflected in the use of architectural forms and other associated aspects of material culture.
