Imposition of Terminology in Simultaneous Interpretation in Conflict Zones: Causes and Consequences

Abstract
Terminology plays a pivotal role in Simultaneous Interpretation (SI). This article examines the imposition, during the SI process in conflict zones, of terminology not corresponding to the one in the source language. It emphasizes the interplay between terminology and fidelity as key parameters in the assessment of interpretation quality. The article is based on a semi-structured interview conducted in March 2024 with the former Minister of Social Affairs of Lebanon, centering on the imposition of terminology during the SI of a meeting between the UN and Ministry officials. By employing open-ended questions, the interview sought to identify the motivations behind terminology imposition in SI and its repercussions, and to determine its effects on the fidelity and overall quality of SI. The analysis looks into terminology in the political context, the imposition of terminology, and neologisms, and delves into their political use. The study then addresses the case of interpretation of the term “Refugee” in English into “Displaced” in Arabic, set against the backdrop of the conflicts in Lebanon and Syria. It shows how different political perspectives coexist and looks into awareness-raising processes in the political realm. The analysis reveals that terminology imposition serves as a vehicle to convey political messages, but it also helps avoid provocation and protects specific individuals. Moreover, it highlights the detrimental impact on the legal, economic, and social rights of target populations, and the adverse effect on SI fidelity and quality. Ultimately, this study calls for further research into the implications for diverse audiences and the ethical responsibilities of interpreters.
