MUDEJAR ART, approached from the concept of multiculturalism and analyzing how encounters and clashes between cultures take place in a very dynamic and complex period defined by the process of the conquest of Al-Andalus by the Christian kingdoms. I have focused on several locations (i.e., Toledo, Teruel) and especially Granada, where I have also analyzed some issues related to the Moriscos, in particular images and perceptions of otherness. It is evident that exploring Mudejar art implies knowing the legacy of Al-Andalus. For this reason, I have approached this heritage from this Mudejar perspective.
THE ALHAMBRA, particularly looking at the transformations it was subjected to after the conquest of Granada and its occupation by the new Christian power, with a special focus on architectural aspects. The historic richness of the Alhambra is intrinsic to each of its rooms and their various artistic manifestations; yet, the architectural ceramics that I have explored in detail are especially complex. I have also analyzed the division or differentiated use of spaces between men and women in the Alhambra.
GENDER AND ARQUITECTURE, particularly focused on the historic context of Mudejar art and the 16th century. I am interested in two aspects: 1) spaces designed or assigned on a gender basis (i.e., prohibited spaces, places assigned to women, circulations and times in a building according to gender); and 2) the patronage of women in architecture as well as the study of female workers and artisans in construction. I have a firm interest in this line of research and try to set up working teams and unite efforts, as shown by the coordination of collective works on the subject.
THE HOUSE, whose study has been of interest to me regarding the end of the 15th century and the 16th century, particularly indoor spaces, to explore the internal distribution of houses, using archival documents and material culture. To do so, I analyze the distribution of rooms, first on the basis of the various specific functions that have been assigned to them, and second, according to gender and age issues, using household goods and their detailed location inside a dwelling.
RESEARCH FOR PEACE, based on art as a means of socialization, with an interest in the ways of representing peace through art (i.e., iconography of peace, the virtues of peace in artistic theory or monuments to peace). In all these aspects, it has been essential to apply the gender approach. My research on gender and peace focuses on iconographic models that have been transgressed or consolidated since antiquity on the role of men and women in relation to peace and all its semantic field.
