Título: Emotional control of perception and brain states
Abstract:
Emotions do not only serve to assign a particular value to objects or events forming the content of consciousness, but can directly influence perception and thus shape the content of consciousness and action. The talk will present an overview of functional neuroimaging studies in humans that contributed to show how sensory and motor processes can be modulated by the affective significance of stimuli. Furthermore, emotional events can also influence brain activity in a more sustained manner, with long-lasting changes in brain state and functional connectivity following transient emotions, and these effects may in turn influence the subsequent processing of other stimuli. These findings also have implications to better understand and assess neural mechanisms that may be implicated in psychiatry disorders.

Título: The Cognitive-Emotional Brain: from Interactions to Integration
Abstract:
The current view of brain organization supports the notion that there is a considerable degree of functional specialization and that many regions can be conceptualized as either ‘affective’ or ‘cognitive’. Popular examples are the amygdala in the domain of emotion and the lateral prefrontal cortex in the case of cognition. This prevalent view is problematic for a number of reasons. It will be argued that complex cognitive–emotional behaviors have their basis in networks of brain areas, none of which should be conceptualized as specifically affective or cognitive. Central to cognitive–emotional interactions are brain areas with a high degree of connectivity called hubs (e.g., amygdala), which are critical for regulating the flow and integration of information between regions. To illustrate cognitive-emotional processing, I will discuss a series of studies that have investigated interactions between emotion and perception (including studies showing that emotional perception is not automatic) and between emotion and executive function.

Los procesos de motivación y emoción están estrechamente relacionados, pero los intereses de investigación actuales marcan diferencias entre ellos. La Psicología de la Motivación tiene una fundamentación teórica sólidamente establecida y el interés actual en su estudio está determinado por sus diversos campos de aplicación. La Psicología de la Emoción está incorporando nuevos procedimientos de investigación que están revitalizando la relevancia del estudio de los procesos afectivos. Se revisarán los principales marcos históricos de referencia en el estudio de la motivación humana (las teorías de metas, las de autodeterminación, las de autorregulación, etc.) y su proyección actual. Igualmente, se describirán los ámbitos y líneas de investigación sobre la emoción, agrupadas fundamentalmente por procesos psicológicos y neuropsicológicos (memoria, atención, valoración, neurofisiología, inteligencia,…) y por ámbitos de aplicación (psicopatología, enfermedades orgánicas, rehabilitación, intervención psicosocial, educación, RRHH). Se identificarán los nuevos y fructíferos ámbitos de investigación que se están afianzando en nuestro país.
