Domina mea: women, protection and charity in Spanish Late Antiquity (5th-7th centuries)

Resumen

Las fuentes escritas y arqueológicas, con especial atención a los documentos epigráficos, de la Tardoantigüedad hispana (ss. V‑VII d. C.) nos permiten identificar un sector privilegiado de mujeres, capaces de acumular bienes económicos y prestigio social. Las relaciones de protección y caridad que patrocinan constituyen el vehículo fundamental de la expresión exterior de su excelencia en sociedad de la época.

Abstract

Written and archaeological sources, specially the epigraphical documents, in spanish Late Antiquity (5th-7th centuries) allow us to identify a privileged group of women, able to gather wealth and social prestige. The relationships of protection and charity which they support are the main outside expression of their excellence in the society of the age.
