TITLE: RELATIONS BETWEEN TECTONIC AND VOLCANIC SEISMICITY OF TENERIFE THROUGH THE STUDY OF THE CRUSTAL AND MANTLE INTERNAL STRUCTURE OF THE OCEANIC CHANNEL BETWEEN TENERIFE AND GRAN CANARIA

REFERENCE: CGL2009-05901-E/BTE

FUNDING: 18000 €

PERIOD: OCTOBER 2009 - OCTOBER 2011

The aim of this project is the installation of five broadband seismic stations in Gran Canaria Island. They will be recording for two years, allowing us to tackle the following issues:

- the investigation of the crustal and upper mantle structures through receiver function analysis of teleseismic events.

- the determination the level of microsismicity in Gran Canaria Island, and in particular, the detection of any type of local sismicity of volcanic origin.

-the detailed analysis (location, mechanism) of earthquakes that occur in the oceanic channel between Tenerife and Gran Canaria. This area is one of the more important seismogenetic zones of the Canarian archipelago. Our stations complement other networks (IGN, HISS project) which do not have a good coverage in Gran Canaria.

- the study of the shallow structure of Gran Canaria and the oceanic channel through background noise correlation.

- the study of the seismic anisotropy of the crust and mantle through SKS analysis.
