El propósito de este artículo es dar cuenta de cómo se objetivó el cuerpo, particularmente el de las mujeres, en el contexto de los discursos sobre higiene en Puerto Rico, a partir de textos de finales del siglo XIX. Se examinan por una parte las luchas y tensiones que sostuvieron médicos y letrados en su afán por erradicar y deslegitimar formas de saber y prácticas en torno al cuerpo que fueron configuradas como obstáculos al desarrollo de la medicina en tanto saber-poder en la Isla. Se enfatiza particularmente el proceso de objetivación del cuerpo femenino, a través del cual se manifiestan y canalizan las ansiedades de gobernabilidad de la Isla.

The purpose of this paper is to analyse how bodies, particularly female bodies, were treated and objectified by hygiene and sanitarians discourses in Porto Rico, at the end of the 19th Century. The paper examines the tensions and troubles raised by physicians and intellectuals in their effort to eradicate some forms of knowledge that they considered to be an obstacle to expand the new science of medicine in a power-knowledge relation. The article focuses, particularly, on the way that feminine bodies were portrayed as ungovernable, connecting with their anxieties about ruling the Ireland.
