Rosalía de Castro (1837-1885) es, sin duda, artífice esencial de la historia contemporánea de Galicia. Ella fue su voz y su intérprete principal. A su patriotismo une una preocupación constante por la condición y la suerte de las mujeres, que se hace medular en toda su obra. Su feminismo es correlato de su posición vital, filosófica y política en la vida. Se hace preciso desentrañar los motivos de una falsa leyenda que todavía la envuelve y devolverla a la verdad de su producción, su radicalidad y su transgresión como librepensadora y poeta. Ella representa, en suma, el inicio de la modernidad gallega.

Rosalía de Castro (1837-1885) is undoubtedly an essential architect of the Contemporary Galician History. She was its voice and its principal interpreter. Her patriotism is united to her constant worry for womeńs condition and fate, which is a central topic throughout her work. Her feminism is correlative to her vital, philosophic and political position in life. It is necessary to puzzle out the reasons of a false legend that still surrounds her and bring her back to the truth of her production, her radicalism and her transgression as a freethinker and poet. She represents, in short, the beginning of Galician modernity.
