Between risk and necessity: pregnancy, childbirth and cult to the Virgin in the feminine sphere of the Alcázar of Madrid (17th Century)

Resumen

Este artículo analiza el momento trascendental que, para la Monarquía Católica del Antiguo Régimen suponía la llegada al mundo de herederos. Un momento en el que los saberes científicos de médicos y comadres convergían e interactuaban con el recurso a la divinidad, canalizado mediante ciertas devociones y reliquias marianas asociadas al embarazo y parto exitoso de las reinas. El análisis de todo ello nos ha permitido explorar el mundo de los nacimientos en el desaparecido Alcázar de Madrid y algunas de las prácticas religiosas más significativas para la comunidad femenina que habitó en él durante la primera mitad del siglo XVII.

ABSTRACT

This article analyses the significant moment that, for the Catholic Monarchy of the Early Modern period, supposed the birth of heirs. A moment in which the scientific knowledge of physicians and midwives converged with the seek of divine help, by means of certain Marian devotions and relics associated with the queen’s successful pregnancy and delivery. In this article, I explore the world of childbirth at the former Alcázar of Madrid, together with some key devotions for its feminine community in the first half of Seventeenth Century.
