Tradicionalmente la historiografía del arte no ha mostrado un gran interés por la Prehistoria. No obstante, algunos de los más importantes historiadores del arte han analizado y reflexionado sobre el arte en la Prehistoria. En este texto analizamos algunas de esas ausencias, motivadas por las diferentes metodologías que presenta la Prehistoria ante otros períodos artísticos como la falta de documentación escrita y por tanto la gran complejidad en el análisis de los sentidos y las funciones de las obras. Pero esencialmente nos centramos en las aportaciones hechas desde la Historia del Arte, algunas que consolidan los discursos patriarcales de la Historia del Arte pero otras que innovan el conocimiento. Desde una perspectiva de género planteamos algunas reflexiones aplicables a la interpretación de la creación artística en la Prehistoria, esencialmente en lo que se refiere a las mujeres como sujetos activos del arte en ese período.

Traditionally the historiography of arts has not shown an interest about Prehistory. Nevertheless, some of the more important historians of arts have thought about art in Prehistory. In this text we analyze some of these absences motivated by the archaeological methodology that Prehistory needs in front of other historic periods with written sources and, due to this, the complexity in the analysis of senses and function of the artistic representations. We will focus in the contributions made from the History of Arts, some of them consolidate patriarchal discourses but other represents innovations in the knowledge. From a gender perspective we establish some views in order to interpret artistic creations in Prehistory, essentially regarding women as active agents in art in this period.
