Este artículo estudia la figura de la nodriza y el intento de reglamentación de la lactancia mercenaria, en conexión con el movimiento de protección social a la infancia. Se trató de paliar el alto índice de mortalidad infantil, considerando como una de las medidas fundamentales de solución al terrible problema el control legal de las agencias de nodrizas y la reglamentación de la lactancia “a sueldo”. Otras medidas adoptadas, junto a la creación de instituciones asistenciales y mejora de las ya existentes, fueron las dirigidas a la concienciación social del problema, desarrollando por diversos medios una campaña de divulgación educativa, especialmente dirigida a las mujeres, en el cuidado y alimentación de los niños.

This article studies the figure of the wet-nurse and the attempt of regulation of mercenary breast-feeding, in connection with the social movement of child-welfare. The high infant mortality rate was tried to lessen, considering the legal control over wet-nurses agencies and the regulated breast-feeding “on salary” as a main measure to solve this awful problem. Other measures taken, as well as the creation of social welfare institutions and improving the existing ones, were aimed to the awareness of the problem, developing with several means an educational spreading campaign, specially addressed to women, on childcare and children’s feeding.
