Education

He obtained his degrees in Pharmacy as well as in Clinical Analyses,Teaching and Ph.D by the University of Granada. He has also the degrees of Specialist in Clinical Biochemistry and in Clinical Analyses by the Spanish Ministry of Health. He was postdoctoral fellow (Juan March Foundation) in the Ramón y Cajal Hospital (Madrid, Spain).

Teaching

He teaches Clinical Biochemistry and Molecular Pathology at both the Faculties of Pharmacy and Sciences of the University of Granada. He participates in the master courses of Pharmaceutical Care, Research & Development & Control & Innovation of Medicines and Molecular Biology Applied to Biotechnological Enterprises (BioEnterprise) of the University of Granada and in the Biotechnology and Biomedicine master course of the University of Jaén. He has participated in masters and doctoral courses in the Universities of Granada, Jaén and Málaga and in the Mundusfor Erasmus Mundus master degree (University of Granada, Rovira I Virgili University, Spain; University of Rheims Champagne-Ardenne, France; Akershus University College, Norway; University of Porto, Portugal).

He has been Visiting Associate Professor in the Mount Sinai School of Medicine (New York, USA) and Visiting Professor in the Sint Jan Hospital (Brugge, Belgium). He is also Adjunct Professor of the College of Pharmacy of the University of New England, Portland, Maine (USA).

He has participated in the lifelong learning programs of the Colleges of pharmacists of Albacete, Alicante, Almeria, Badajoz, Cádiz, Castellón, Córdoba, Granada, Málaga and Murcia. He has participated in the international program of the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation (AECI) in Barranquilla (Colombia) and in the international program of the Iberoamerican Association of Universities of Postgraduate (AUIP) in Lima (Perú), Bogotá, Medellín and Caldas (Colombia). He has also participated in the Erasmus+ staff mobility for teaching program in Kosovo. He has coordinated joint courses with the University of Prishtina (Kosovo) and the University of New England (USA). He also paticipates in the international program of the University of New England and in internacional program studies in Spain of the University of Samford (USA).

He received the University of Granada Excellence in Teaching Award 2017.

Research

He belongs to the andalusian research group BIO-342: Epigenetics in Stem Cells and Cancer and has been part of the groups CTS461: Biochemistry of Nutrition. Therapeutics implications and in the CTS235: Unsaturated fat and nucleotides.Therapeutics implications, working in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology II of the Faculty of Pharmacy and the Institute of Nutrition and Food Technology of Granada. He collaborates with the Pharmacogenomics unit of the Hospital Virgen de la Nieves, the Pfizer-University of Granada-Junta de Andalucía Center for Genomics and Oncological Research (GENYO) and the Merck Sharp & Dohme-University of Granada-Junta de Andalucía Center of Excellence in Research of Innovative Medicines in Andalucía ( MEDINA). He also belongs to the Chair Sandoz of Pharmaceutical Care at the University of Granada.

He has participated in a series of projects founded by the University of Granada, the regional government of Junta de Andalucía, the Spanish Ministry of Health (FIS program), the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (CICYT program) and the European programs FEDER and Marie Curie, the European Commission (see projects).

He has directed doctoral theses, master theses, and published various series of research articles related mainly to the nutritional role of dietary nucleotides, perinatal biochemistry, metabolism and metabolomics, cancer and pharmacogenomics and several chapters of text books (see publications).

He won the prize of the University of Granada for his doctoral thesis, as well as the prize of the Caja General de Ahorros de Granada for researchers; in addition he and his colleagues won the prize of the Patronato de Medicina Perinatal 1981, the prize of the Consejo General de Colegios Farmacéuticos in 1987 and 1996, the prize Fresenius-Kabi of the Spanish Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition in 1998.

He is the coordinator of the International Doctoral Program in Pharmacy of the Unversity of Granada.

Traslational research and Technological transfer

His research group won the prize University of the Spanish University-Enterprise Foundations Network in 2007 and the prize of the Social Council. University of Granada 2010.

He is a member of the Spanish Network of Entrepreneur Scientists and of the Technical Committee for Nutrition and Bioactive Ingredients of the Andalusian Technological Corporation. He is an adviser of the PTS Foundation of the Technology Park of Granada in the areas of knowledge transfer, internationalization and entrepreneurship.

He is the coordinator of the masters degree in Molecular Biology Applied to Biotechnological Enterprises and was the national coordinator of the masters degrees of the Spanish Society of Biochemistry and Molecuar Biology 2015-16. He is also a member of the Life Train initiative for competency-based continuing professional development in the biomedical sciences in Europe.

Quality Evaluation

He is a consultant of: the Scientific Committee for Food of the European Commission, the Spanish Agency of Medicament, the Spanish Ministry of Health (FIS program), the Spanish National Evaluation and Propspective Agency (ANEP) and La Caixa Foundation Fellowship Program. He is also consultant of the Irish Research Council and the Board of Advanced Studies and Research, University of Karachi (Pakistan).

He is an editor of Pharmacy and the Journal of Nutrition and Health Sciences, member of the editorial committee of Foxwell & Davies Publisher, member of the editorial board of Ars Pharmaceutica and of Pharmacy .

He is a referee of the journals Acta Paediatrica, European Journal of Physiology, Gut, Medical Science Monitor, Journal of Proteomics, Mollecular and Cellular Biochemistry; British Journal of Pharmaceutical Research, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Journal, Annals of Breast Cancer Research, as well as of the British Journal of Education, Society & Behavioural Science.

In relation to quality and accreditation, he is a consultant of the Spanish Ministry of the Education for quality in the universities, the Spanish Agency for Quality (ANECA), the Andalusia Unit for Quality (UCUA), the Agency of Quality Evaluation and Accreditation of the Basque University System (UNIBASQ) , the Kosovo Accreditaton Agency (KAA) and the Agency of the Sistema Nacional de Acreditación de la Educación Superior. Estado de Costa Rica (SINAES), the  International Services Program Advisory Group of the USA Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Education & Training Evaluation Commission National Center for Academic Accreditation and evAluation (NCAAA). He has been international member of accreditation teams in the University of Costa Rica, University of Medellin (Colombia), University Latina (Costa Rica), University of Iberoamérica (Costa Rica), University of Manizales (Colombia), University of Ajman (United Arab Emirates), University of San Carlos (Guatemala), Universidad de Ciencias Médicas (Costa Rica), King Saud University, Riyadh ( Saudi Arabia).

He is also a consultant of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic, the World University Service (Austrian Committee), the Training and Mobility Task Force of the Coimbra Group of Universities.

Memberships

He is academician of the Academy of Pharmacy “Sta. María de España” and of the Iberoamerican Academy of Pharmacy.He was a member of the board of trustees of the International University of Andalusia.

He is a member of the Spanish Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biolog, the EuPA Open Proteomics and The Science Advisory Board. He was a member of the Spanish Society of Clinical Chemistry and Molecular Pathology, the European Lipoprotein Club, and the Spanish National Committee for Clinical Biochemistry.

He is also a member of the Center for International Higher Education of Boston College (USA).

Management and leadership

He has been Secretary of the Department of Biochemistry, Vice-dean of Academic Affairs and Study Plans of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Sub-director of the School of Clinical Analyses, Director of the Innovation and Quality Programs, Vice-rector Commissioner for the European Higher Education Area, Vice-rector for Teaching Planning and Innovation of the University of Granada and General Director of Universities of the Government of Andalucía, Spain.
