Jost Wiedamm nació en Breslau (hoy Wroclaw en Polonia) el 31 de marzo de 1931. Llegó como refugiado a Berlín en 1945 completando allí su enseñanza secundaria. Luego hizo la licenciatura de Geología y Paleontología en la Universidad Libre de Berlín occidental. Posteriormente, se trasladó a Tubinga en 1952 donde realizó estudios paleontológicos bajo la supervisión del Profesor O. H. Schindewolf.
Unos trabajos prácticos en las minas cretácicas de Salzgitter (Baja Sajonia, Alemania), seguidos por varios meses de trabajos de campo para el consorcio petrolero de Deilmann-CIEPSA en España y Portugal sirvieron de base para comenzar sus estudios sobre el Cretácico, particularmente en la Península Ibérica, y despertaron su pasión por la estratigrafía de ammonites que mantuvo de por vida. Finalizó su tesis doctoral en 1960, bajo la dirección de O. H. Schindewolf, en Tubinga. Esta tesis fue un estudio de los Lytoceratina y Phyllocetatina de lo que él llamaba en los años 50 el 'Cretácico Vascogótico', en el Norte de España. La amplitud de temas de su tesis, comprendiendo la bioestratigrafía, el desarrollo de facies sedimentarias y su relación con la infraestructura tectónica, motivó la continuación en sus estudios futuros. Los datos precisos y su amplia visión del Cretácico estableció pronto su buena reputación e hizo indispensable su presencia y contribución en comités internacionales y grupos de trabajo.
Entre 1960 y 1965 fue 'Wissenschaftlicher Assistent' (profesor ayudante) en la cátedra de O. H. Schindewolf, en Tubinga. Durante 1965 obtuvo su Doctorado en Ciencias (Habilitación) en geología y paleontología, por lo que fue nombrado lector. En 1971 le fue concedida una plaza de profesor temporal, posición que fue permanente como Catedrático en 1979. Además impartió docencia en Frankfurt y en Giessen. En Tubinga, entre 1974 y 1975 fue Vicedecano (Prodekan) y puso en marcha, con numerosos estudiantes, un Centro de investigación cretácica. Desde 1970 a 1984 fue un miembro importante del proyecto de investigación especial (Sonderforschungsbereich) no 53 'Paleoecología', contribuyendo con datos de control multifactorial de los procesos biológicos y terrestres, con ejemplos tomados de su querida España y también de Marruecos, los Alpes, el Caribe y Suráfrica. Pronto se le conoció por sus aportaciones fundamentales sobre correlación bioestratigráfica, tales como el límite Jurásico-Cretácico, los orígenes biogeográficos y paleoceanográficos de las provincias faunísticas y los efectos de los procesos hidrodinámicos en el desarrollo de faunas sobre la plataforma marina.
Sus buenas relaciones con colegas extranjeros le llevaron a participar en proyectos internacionales de la IUGS y del DSDP/IPOD. Hay que destacar sus esfuerzos (como refugiado que fue durante los años 40) en la construcción de relaciones con paises del antiguo Bloque oriental, por ejemplo con universidades y academias de Ostrava (antigua Checoslovaquia), Varsovia (Polonia), Tbilisi (Georgia), Moscú (Rusia) y también Freiberg, Sajonia (antigua República Democrática Alemana). Estos contactos fructificaron en una intensa colaboración e intercambio sobre la bioestratigrafía de ammonites y el desarrollo de los estudios cretácicos en Europa oriental. Como reconocimiento de su contribución a este intercambio científico le fue concedida una distinción por el Ministro de Educación de Polonia en 1990, lo que supuso un gran honor para Jost Wiedmann.
A través de la supervisión de numerosas estancias postdoctorales, becadas por la Fundación Humboldt, y sus viajes mantuvo relaciones estrechas con colegas como H. Leanza (Buenos Aires), H. C. Klinger (Ciudad del Cabo), Z. Vasicek (Ostrava), R. Marcinowski (Varsovia), M. Kakabadze (Tbilisi), y A. Alabushev (Magadan, Siberia). Estas colaboraciones dieron lugar a un gran número de publicaciones y a la resolución de problemas regionales relacionados con el estudio del Cretácico y sus faunas. También mantuvo una estrecha colaboración con muchos amigos y colegas en Escandinavia, España, Francia, Inglaterra, Italia, Turquía, Estados Unidos, Suramérica y Norte de Africa.
Como desarrollo de su experiencia estuvo constantemente involucrado en trabajos de colaboración y llevó a cabo labores de coordinación en grupos internacionales, en particular los proyectos del PICG números 58 'Acontecimientos del Cretácico medio', 171 'Jurásico circumpacífico', 183 'Correlación del Mesozoico y Cenozoico de Africa occidental' y 191 'Climas cretácicos'. También formó parte de los proyectos del PICG relacionados con los eventos globales del límite Cretácico-Terciario.
Fue el trabajo y empeño de Jost Wiedmann los que dieron lugar a la celebración del I Simposio Internacional del Cretácico, en Münster (Alemania), que fue seguido por los de Munich (1982), Tubinga (1987), Hamburgo (1992) y Freiberg (1996). En 1985, junto con J. Kullmann, organizaron el II Simposio Internacional sobre Cefalópodos, en Tubinga.
En 1984 realizó un compromiso de investigación con la Universidad de Linares (México). En ese mismo año fue invitado a incorporarse como Catedrático en la Universidad de Hamburgo, pero prefirió permanecer en Tubinga, hecho que aumentó la apreciación y reconocimiento que sus colegas, en la Universidad de Tubinga, le tenían.
Su amplitud de conocimientos viene demostrada por las especialidades del amplio número de estudiantes que estuvieron bajo su dirección, de los cuales W. Kuhnt (foraminíferos), J. Reitner (sedimentología, poríferos) y J. Thurow (radiolarios) son actualmente Catedráticos, así como por la riqueza de temas de sus publicaciones y volúmenes editados.
Durante las excursiones, Jost Wiedmann presentaba a los estudiantes de postgrado las bases sobre el Cretácico español, no sólo del norte sino también de la Cordillera Bética. Sus enseñanzas no se limitaban a explicar a los estudiantes los complejos problemas estratigráficos, sedimentológicos y tectónicos de la geología española, sino también les introducía al estilo de vida español (tal como él lo entendía), a la historia de España (especialmente al periodo de la invasión de los visigodos, entre los años 500 y 600 A.D.), y acerca de sus iglesias de estilo románico.
En 1991 celebró su 60 cupleaños entre las montañas de Nepal, durante una expedición geológica para estudiar el Jurásico y Cretácico del Himalaya de aquella región. En el otoño de 1992 cayó gravemente enfermo y durante 1993 estuvo continuamente bajo tratamiento médico. No obstante, permaneció trabajando durante su enfermedad, escribiendo o supervisando publicaciones, planificando nuevos proyectos de investigación y terminando antiguos proyectos o escribiendo los informes finales. La mayoría de la gente no se percató en ese año de 1993 de lo enfermo que estaba, y aún en octubre tenía la esperanza de recuperarse. Pero en noviembre de 1993 su estado de salud sufrió un empeoramiento repentino y murió el 2 de diciembre. Con Jost Wiedmann, perdimos un colega entusiasta y entregado, un especialista en estratigrafía de ammonites, un perspicaz trabajador en paleoecología y paleobiogeografía, y un investigador clave en la estratigrafía del Cretácico y el desarrollo de la sedimentología no sólo de España y Latinoamérica, sino también de Alemania, Europa oriental y la parte oriental del Tethys.
