Analysis of the final year students’ perception on their database searching skills

Abstract

One of the main novelties of the European Higher Education Space within the Spanish educational system is that all university students need to elaborate a final-year project in order to obtain the degree title. This academic task requires to master different skills such as writing and understanding academic text, making oral presentation and, being the focus of this paper, database information searching skills. The aim of this study was to analyze the perception of a group of final-year undergraduate students from University of Granada regarding their level of mastery in searching for information in databases and other online resources as well as using reference management software. The sample comprised 103 students. Results show that an important percentage of the participants only dominated information seeking in Spanish to a little extent and almost the majority of the participants considered they had very little skill or no skill at all in searching for information in English. The majority of the participants considered they were not skilful or had very little knowledge on using reference management software. Final-year students need to receive more training so they can feel confident in their ability to search for information and to use reference management software.
