Isaac Triguero

I am the Director of the Andalusian Interuniversity Institute in Data Science and Computational Intelligence (DaSCI) and an Associate Professor (Profesor Titular) at the Department of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence of the University of Granada. My research focuses on large-scale data analytics and optimisation, with particular emphasis on General-Purpose Artificial Intelligence Systems (GPAIS), self-supervised learning, anomaly detection, explainable AI and federated learning. I am also the Chair of the IEEE CIS Task Force on LLMs and Computational Intelligence for General-Purpose AI Systems (GPAIS).

Research interests

I am an active member of the computational intelligence and data mining communities. My work is primarily concerned with researching novel methodology for large-scale data analytics and optimisation. Relevant research works include the development of state-of-the-art big data pre-processing techniques for classification, novel big data learning algorithms, extreme big data problems (e.g. imbalanced classification), and real-world solutions in Health and Energy, including a publication in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine.

My current work centres on General-Purpose Artificial Intelligence Systems (GPAIS), self-supervised learning, anomaly detection, explainable AI and federated learning. I co-lead three projects on GPAIS: IAFER (ENIA programme), A3GPAIS (Spanish Ministry of Science) and the Horizon Europe project KnoWare, and I am Co-PI of the Andalusian Digital Innovation Hub in AI and Robotics (AIRA, Horizon Europe).

Apart from my main research line, I am very interested in biometrics problems (especially fingerprint recognition, have you seen my video on ComputerPhile?), the application of evolutionary models in real-world optimisation problems (e.g. Photovoltaic plants).

About me

Isaac was born and bred in a small town, called Atarfe, in the region of the magnificent Granada, Spain, where the emblematic Arabic palace and fortress 'Alhambra' sits. Isaac studied his MSc and PhD degrees in Computer Science at the University of Granada, where he was drawn into all the buzz words of the moment (Data science and Big data) before departing to Ghent where he worked (and mostly ate waffles on a daily basis) as a postdoctoral researcher in the Data Mining and Modelling for Biomedicine group (DAMBI - http://www.dambi.ugent.be/), headed by Prof. Saeys. In 2016, Isaac joined the School of Computer Science at the University of Nottingham, where he was soon severely punished and trapped into teaching a programming course with Thorsten, and Operating Systems and Concurrency with Geert De Maere, before designing a Big Data module of his own. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2020.

In 2022 the Alhambra called him back: Isaac returned to Granada as a María Zambrano distinguished researcher. He is now Profesor Titular at the University of Granada and, since May 2026, Director of the DaSCI Institute.
