METHODS

 

IBERSIMS is, in principle, mainly concerned with geochronology, especially U-Th-Pb in zircon.

U-Th-Pb dating of other minerals such as monazite, allanite or rutile are under development. Whether to offer them to general public depends on the availability of suitable standards


U-Th-Pb in zircon is done using the TEMORA zircon as isotope ratio standard, and the SL13 zircon as concentration standard

The acquisition method is based in the well-checked method routinely used at the Australian National University’s Research School of Earth Sciences

Data reduction is made with SHRIMPTOOLS, a free-available software developed at IBERSIMS as STATA ado files. SHRIMPTOOLS run on any Mac, Windows or Unix computer. The only requirement is to have the commercial package STATA 11, or newer

IBERSIMS also offers O isotopes in zircon and multicollection Pb isotopes in feldspar to general public. Methods for analyzing (1) O isotopes in other minerals such as garnet, carbonates and phosphates, and (2) S and B isotopes are under development

In principle, IBERSIMS is not committed to analyze trace elements, such as REE, etc. In most cases this can be done at a fraction of time and money in the LA-ICPMS facility of the CIC-UGR
