This week the University of Granada hosted the 3rd meeting of the CHINLONE Erasmus+ project, which focuses on the development of high quality degrees and curricula at universities in Myanmar. The main objective of this Erasmus+ project, which is coordinated by the University of Bologna, is to contribute to the internationalization of the higher education system in Myanmar, fostering innovation and facilitating the country’s transition towards a knowledge-based economy.
The acronym “CHINLONE” stands for “Connecting Higher Education Institutions for a New Leadership on National Education” and is also the name of a popular ball sport (also known as caneball) played in Myanmar.
In the European context, the University of Bologna (Italy); Uppsala University (Sweden); the Coimbra Group; and the University of Granada are all participating in the project, while in Myanmar, the University of Mandalay; Dagon University; the University of Yangon; Yezin Agricultural University; and the Burmese Ministry of Education are all involved in the initiative. The project was launched in 2017 and will be completed in October 2020.
In order to achieve the primary goal of enhancing innovation and internationalization processes in the higher education system in Myanmar, the following secondary objectives have been established:
- To modernise the management and administration of universities in Myanmar.
- To enhance the competencies of lecturers working at these universities—especially in designing programmes and in teaching and innovation—employing approaches that take the learning outcomes for students into account.
- To set up and improve international relations offices at universities in Myanmar.
- To strengthen cooperation between EU countries and Myanmar, with a view to promoting knowledge sharing at all levels of academia.
Artur Schmitt, Director for International Strategy, Projects and Networks, and Aurora del Río, Director of the Data, Information and Planning Office jointly presented the University of Granada’s strategic plans at the first project meeting, which took place in Bologna in March.
The second meeting was held in Naypyidaw (the capital of Myanmar) in September and was attended by Irene Ortiz, from the UGR’s Department of Edaphology and Agricultural Chemistry (UGR) and Aurora del Río. This second event focused on the Bologna Process and best practices in the design of high quality programmes and curricula. A day of activities and workshops was also held with all of the universities in Myanmar.
