The University of Granada will host the working conference titled ‘Migrants and Refugees: Inclusion Policies and Practices’ from the 22 to 23 June 2018. The conference will explore inclusion policies and practices aimed at migrants and refugees with a strong focus on local-level perspectives, bringing together researchers, policymakers, non-governmental representatives, as well as migrants and refugees. The challenges faced by all of these actors in shaping and implementing inclusion policies and practices will be discussed from the perspectives of four European cities: Berlin, Granada, Toulouse, and Wrocław.
Granada, as one of the most important migration routes into Europe, provides the perfect backdrop for discussing historical and contemporary perspectives on central topics such as diaspora, migration, inclusion policies and asylum. Moreover, the Alhambra palace and fortress complex in Granada—one of the most well-known UNESCO World Heritage Sites on the globe—epitomises the cultural significance of migrant communities and their relocation in Europe. Accordingly, the event will juxtapose historical and contemporary migration processes and practices, drawing parallels between the past and present.
In particular, the conference will tackle pressing issues related to the implementation of inclusion policies in sectors such as education, housing, labour markets, and social services, to mention just a few. Moreover, it will highlight the shortcomings of relevant legal frameworks when it comes to safeguarding the socio-economic integration of refugees.
Although migration policies are heavily influenced by national legislation, a primary goal of the event is to highlight the importance of local level actors in shaping inclusion policies and actions with regard to migrants and refugees.
By contrasting migration trends and inclusion strategies from four countries, the conference aims to provide a platform for the effective exchange of knowledge and practices, involving local policymakers and activists in this process, with a view to building more diverse and equal societies through a bottom-up approach.
The conference is free and open to the public. Advance registration is not necessary.
