The University of Granada recently joined the consortium in charge of the MITRA Erasmus Mundus Master’s Degree in Transnational Migration, a pioneering programme that is jointly offered by seven European universities and three associate universities from Greece, Senegal and Brazil. The degree was launched in 2012 and was remodelled in 2018 when four additional universities—including the University of Granada—joined the consortium. The UGR will participate in the programme through its Master's Degree in Social Research and Development and Socio-Educational Intervention.

Through transdisciplinary approaches, MITRA aims to explore international migration and its impact on contemporary societies. The study of migration issues has been endorsed by the European Commission as a key objective in response to burgeoning populism, xenophobia, discrimination and nationalism. In this vein, MITRA advocates the development of more inclusive societies in which citizens respect the fundamental values of the EU. It endeavours to achieve this objective through cutting-edge research, education and civic engagement.

This new, revamped version of the degree was presented at the University of Lille on the 14 December 2018. The degree coordinator, Isabelle Surun, who is also the local coordinator of the programme at the University of Lille, was joined at the event by representatives from the respective partner institutions, including the coordinator of the UGR’s Master's Degree in Social Research and Development and Socio-Educational Intervention, alongside representatives from the Vice-Rectorate for Internationalization and the International School for Postgraduate Studies. The considerable wider relevance of the degree for academic institutions, civil society organisations and society at large was underscored during the working session.

The deadline for applications to this 2-year Erasmus Mundus master’s degree is the 15 January 2019.
