UGR scientists design a new hydrogel that helps regenerate cartilage

An international team of scientists demonstrates that polyacrylate hydrogels create the support and microenvironment necessary for the growth and maintenance of cartilage cells (chondrocytes), and could be optimal candidates for use in clinical practice. The results have been published in the prestigious journal Acta Biomaterialia.

UGRTerm language database now features over 40,000 terms in English and Spanish

UGRTerm, the Spanish-English language resource that was launched in 2018, contains the official nomenclature of the University of Granada and a considerable number of terms and expressions related to research and higher education. It also features terminology from spheres such as the social sciences and humanities; law; economics and statistics; information, communication and public events; public infrastructure; and politics, government and administration. The resource now contains over 40,000 terms.

The UGR participates with NASA in the discovery of the fastest “rapidly-oscillating star”

An international team of scientists, including researchers from the University of Granada and the Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia (IAA-CSIC), has identified five new rapidly-oscillating Ap (roAp) stars. Two of these stars are of particular interest: one of them is cooler than the norm, and the other is the fastest–pulsating roAp star discovered to date: it completes an oscillation every 4.7 minutes.

Adequate intake of milk and dairy products in different life stages helps prevent chronic diseases

Ángel Gil, Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Granada, has recently coordinated a study reviewing worldwide scientific literature on the role of dairy products in health and in the prevention of chronic diseases (cardiovascular, metabolic syndrome, colon or bladder cancer, and type 2 diabetes). The review also covers the effects of dairy products on growth, bone mineral density, generation of muscle mass, and during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Nine out of ten pairs of baby socks on the market contain traces of bisphenol A and parabens

A team of scientists from the University of Granada (UGR), the Biohealth Research Institute in Granada (ibs.GRANADA), the city’s San Cecilio University Hospital, and the Centre for Biomedical Research in Epidemiology and Public Health (CIBERESP) has found that 9 out of 10 pairs of socks for babies and children from 0–4 years old contain traces of bisphenol A and parabens.
