Honeycomb, symbolising the interconnected nature of the social sciences

The 13th International Conference on Interdisciplinary Social Sciences will take place at the University of Granada from 25 to 27 July 2018. Launched in 2006, the Interdisciplinary Social Sciences Research Network is brought together by a common interest in disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches, within and across the various social sciences, and between the social, natural and applied sciences. It has been built upon four fundamental pillars: internationalism, interdisciplinarity, inclusiveness and interaction.

The event aims to assess how interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary and multidisciplinary work crosses disciplinary boundaries and escapes the methodological confines of each specific discipline. The philosophy underpinning the conference embraces the idea that broader views and approaches within the social sciences often prove more powerful than narrower ones that are limited to within-discipline insights.

The focus of the papers will range from the finely-grained and empirical (research practices and results exemplifying one or more disciplines) to wide-ranging multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary perspectives on knowledge and methods.

Moreover, the conference will explore what constitutes "science" in a social context and the connections between the social and other sciences. A key objective is to examine the nature of disciplinary practices in the study of society and the interdisciplinary practices that arise in the context of "real world" applications of social research and theory.
