AIDS | term type: main entry term term type: acronym reliability code: 10 part of speech: noun number: singular definition: disease caused by the HIV, which destroys one type of lymphocyte known as the T4 or helper cell (cell which protects the body against infections and some cancers), originating the breakdown and eventual failure of the immune system. People with AIDS are much more susceptible to infections; and although AIDS is not cancer, it has been associated with the development of several different cancers, including Kaposi's sarcoma, squamous cell carcinoma of the skin, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, Burkitt's lymphoma, primary brain cancer and lymphoma, and cervical cancer. AIDS can be transmitted in several ways, including through genital or anal sex, and through body fluids such as blood. Symptoms of AIDS include weight loss, fever, swollen glands, weakness, headaches, drowsiness, confusion, and chest, skin, or mouth infections. A definitive diagnosis of AIDS is by a blood test for the AIDS virus. Treatment of HIV infection is best accomplished by use of combinations of antiretroviral agents.
