note: By convention the "benign" schwannoma is preferably known as neurilemmoma and the "true" or malignant schwannoma is designated simply as schwannoma. (en)

English
acoustic neuromaterm type: main entry term
part of speech: noun
number: singular
reliability code: 7
definition: benign, usually slow-growing brain tumor that develops from the balance and hearing nerves supplying the inner ear. The tumor comes from an overproduction of Schwann cells. Symptoms include loss of hearing, tinnitus (buzzing or ringing in the ear), dizziness/loss of balance, facial numbness, facial weakness or paralysis on the side of the tumor. Early detection of the tumor is sometimes difficult. Ear examination and hearing test (audiogram) are essential for proper diagnosis, as well as CT scans, and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging. There are three options for managing an acoustic neuroma: surgery, radiation therapy and monitoring.
