PRESENTACION/PRESENTATION

The Universidad de Granada (UGR) has a long-standing tradition in international educational co-operation. In recent years, universities worldwide have recognised the need to consolidate their international activities and also extend them even further. This entails, on the one hand, improving the quality of the bilateral agreements and networks and, on the other, using information-sharing, technical-assistance and back-up systems so as to make the international programmes available to all the university communities.

The UGR’s international profile is soundly reflected in its students. Foreign students study alongside many others who have already been on placements at universities abroad, or who are currently preparing to spend a study period in another country. Likewise, credit recognition has already become a part of our academic tasks, meaning that we are already on the road to creating the European Area of Higher Education. But we have also intensified our relations with institutions in South-America, the Arab nations, Eastern Europe, Asia and the Pacific Region.

The UGR’s growing presence abroad is thanks to the dedicated effort and work of many people throughout our University. The job of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor’s Office for International Relations is to ensure that this work can be carried out under the best possible conditions. This new edition of the International Student Guide provides both national and foreign students with updated information regarding the opportunities available in order to participate in the University’s international activities; an area in which the UGR places constant interest and commitment.

THE CITY OF GRANADA

The province of Granada is well-known for having the most diverse geography and climate within the Iberian peninsula. Its coast is sub-tropical, allowing crops such as avocados, custard apples and sugar cane to flourish. Meanwhile, inland, the mountains rise sharply, culminating in the snow-capped peaks of Sierra Nevada, more than 3,400 metres above sea level. This mountain range is home to some of Europe’s rarest alpine flora and fauna.

The city of Granada itself lies some sixty kilometres inland, nestling in the northern foothills of Sierra Nevada and sheltered by the mountains on three sides. To the west lies an open fertile plain, down onto which the water from Sierra Nevada flows and which has always been largely responsible for the city’s historical importance and wealth. Granada has a climate typical of mountainous areas in the Mediterranean basin: hot dry summers and cold dry winters, with cool wet, and occasionally breezy, weather in spring and autumn.

The Kingdom of Granada was the last remaining Moorish stronghold in the Iberian peninsula, and, hence, in the whole of Europe, before finally falling to the “Catholic Monarchs”, King Ferdinand of Aragon and Queen Isabella of Castile, in 1492. Granada still retains much of the flavour of its Moorish past, reflected in the narrow winding streets and Arab houses of its older quarters, such as the Albayzin. And, of course, we must not forget the Alhambra, palace of the Nasrids, the last Arab dynasty to rule over the Kingdom of Granada.

Granada’s many other monuments include fine examples of Gothic art (the tomb of the Catholic Monarchs in the Royal Chapel), Renaissance art (the Palace of Charles V, the Cathedral, the Hospital Real – today the University’s main offices) or Baroque art (the Carthusian Monastery).

THE UNIVERSITY OF GRANADA (UGR)

The original university in Granada, La Madraza, was founded by the Moorish Sultan Yusuf I in 1349. The building was later used as the town hall and is still standing today, close to the Cathedral. The modern university owes its origins to the initiative of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. In 1531, Pope Clement VII issued a papal bull granting the foundation in Granada of a College of General Studies. This institution had the right to issue degrees such as those already conferred by the universities of Bologna, Paris, Salamanca, Alcalá and other similar colleges. The college was housed in a building that was specially designed for the purpose (the Ecclesiastical Curia), just opposite the main entrance to the newly-built cathedral, moving to St. Paul’s College in 1767.

Granada can be considered a true university city, like Oxford and Salamanca, for example, where the university colleges and annexes are spread out around the city. The university’s influence is palpable in all walks of life. During the academic year, scholars and students contribute enormously to the hustle and bustle of daily life in the city. In Granada, one in four inhabitants is a student. The UGR also has campuses in the cities of Ceuta and Melilla, on the coast of northern Africa.

STUDY PROGRAMMES AND SYLLABI

The University is currently revising all its study programmes, in line with the Bologna Process or European Convergence in Higher Education. These newly-devised syllabi consist of two ‘cycles’: Graduate (between 180 and 240 credits), comprising basic teaching of the subject in question together with courses geared toward the professional needs of the student when s/he leaves university; and Postgraduate, devoted to a more in-depth teaching of specific aspects of the subject, along with preparation for the professional application of the student’s knowledge. This level is, in turn, divided into Master’s (60-120 credits) and PhD courses (requiring at least 300 credits at both graduate and postgraduate level). The ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credit represents a workload of 25-30 hours.

N.B.: All figures concerning courses refer to the academic year 2006/07.

ACADEMIC YEAR

The academic year is divided into two semesters: Semester 1, running from the end of September until mid-February (including 1st-semester exams); and Semester 2, running from mid-February until the beginning of July (including 2nd-semester exams). There are holidays both at Christmas (around 14 days) and Easter (1 week).

ADMISSION AND APPLICATIONS

Students on the EU’s LLP-Erasmus and Free Mover programmes must be officially registered at the home university and have a Learning Agreement signed by their home co-ordinator.

Exchange Application Procedure: In order to be accepted onto any of the UGR’s exchange programmes, the student has to be nominated by the international co-ordinator at the home university. In general, all exchange programmes are open to undergraduate and postgraduate students and apply to all courses offered by the UGR. However, certain exchanges are restricted to either undergraduates or postgraduates and some courses have a limited number of places available. Before the end of November each year, Faculties and Schools can propose modifications to the number of exchange places.

Regardless of the type of programme, exchange applications should always include the following:

  • UGR Application Form
  • Transcript of academic record
  • A list of courses to be taken during the exchange (Learning Agreement)

The exchange agreements should be sent to the International Relations Office at least 5 months before the exchange is due to commence.

All exchange students should register at the International Relations Office in order to receive a student ID.

To transfer credits back to the home university, exchange students will receive an official transcript of the credit points taken and grades obtained during their stay at UGR.

For postgraduate applications and other international programmes, the deadlines for sending the required documentation and for enrolment depend on the programme chosen.

For more detailed information, please visit the specific websites of each Faculty, University School or Research Institute. Likewise, you can contact the corresponding international office or co-ordinator (see contact details at back of Guide).

INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMMES

The UGR welcomes international students and academic staff as part of a conscious effort to increase its international profile, which is of utmost importance for the University, an Institution that is constantly striving to widen both its knowledge and its horizons.

We currently have over 10,500 international students, which is approximately 12.5% of the total student population on our different courses and programmes.
The UGR has many agreements and actively collaborates with institutions from around the world, hosting students on all degree courses, both as regular and exchange students.

LLP/ERASMUS PROGRAMME (EU)

Within the framework of the EU’s Longlife Learning Programme (LLP), the UGR has agreements for co-operation and the exchange of students and staff with more than 500 European higher education centres. The UGR receives over 1,900 foreign students through this Programme, placing our University first on the list of Erasmus host institutions.

At the UGR all Erasmus exchange agreements are concluded at faculty or school level. The International Relations Office receives all the signed agreements and co-ordinates relations with the National Erasmus Agency.

In order to organise the Erasmus programme, the University has a co-ordinator in each faculty or school, who is responsible for all internal matters directly related to the programme, as well as being the contact person for other universities and educational institutions who might wish to initiate co-operation with Granada.
Students need to go to the central International Relations Office to register with the university and be issued with a student identity card, which they will need in order to use the university facilities (canteens, libraries, sports facilities, etc.) and to sign up for the Spanish language course.

Students visiting the UGR under the LLP/Erasmus programme have the right to attend one of the free Spanish-language courses organized by the university each year, providing they meet the requirements established each year. The exact dates for the various courses, along with the conditions for application, will be placed yearly on the International Relations Office web page: www.ugr.es/local/ofirint

BILATERAL EXCHANGE AGREEMENTS

The UGR is involved in a wide range of student exchange programmes with Europe, the U.S.A, Canada, Japan, China, Australasia, Latin America, the Arab Nations and the Northern African States.

Foreign students interested in studying at UGR on an Exchange Programme should contact the international office at their home university. The exchange programmes are open to both graduate and postgraduate students for study on any of the courses offered by the UGR.
Most exchange programmes grant exemption from payment of tuition fees and help with students’ living expenses in Granada. Applications for exchange programmes should be sent to our International Relations Office by the home-university exchange co-ordinator. The academic co-ordinators at the Faculties, Schools or Research Institutes involved will approve the recognition of credits.

There are also specific double- or joint-degree programmes in the study areas of Economics and Business Studies (with institutions from Germany, France and the UK), Languages (Italian, Portuguese, English and Slavic Philologies, with institutions from Italy, Portugal, the UK, Russia, the Czech Republic and Germany), Documentation (Germany) and Political Science and Sociology (France and Italy).

The UGR also organises a specific programme for Foreign Language Assistants.

A partial list of universities world wide with which the UGR has established collaboration/student exchange agreements is included in this Guide.

HEALTH CARE

Students from the EU and from countries within the European Economic Space who have the right to public health care in their home countries should bring their European health card with them to Spain. In this way, students will be able to see a doctor at the Health Centre nearest their home in Granada and will receive the same level of health care that Spanish nationals are entitled to.
Non-EU students on an exchange or international programme will need to have their own international medical insurance, except in those cases where the University of Granada has agreed to provide such coverage. The UGR has signed an agreement with the Andalusian Health Service by which foreign (non-EU) students with specific health problems or who need constant medical treatment can receive healthcare.

VISA/RESIDENCE PERMITS

All international students should apply for a residence permit after arriving in Granada. This should be done at the Foreign Affairs Desk (“Extranjería”) at the Police Station (Plaza de los Campos). The information regarding the steps to take and the application form can be found at: www.mir.es/SGACAVT/extranje/ and www.mir.es/SGACAVT/modelos/extranjeria/modelos_extranje/index.html
