Geosites of the Murcia Region

Departure from Caravaca at 9h, on September 15th. Pabellón Multiservicios

This fieldtrip visits geosites of international relevance recently identified within the Geosites Program, as well as other sites of geological interest (national and local geosites) in the Murcia Region. Apart from geological details, topics discussed during fieldtrip stops will include protection and restoration of geosites, vulnerability and degradation, legal measures, and practical examples of public use, interpretation and sustainable tourism integrated with local natural and cultural resources.

First stop: Barranco del Gredero, Caravaca: Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary clay. A classical "K/T" boundary impact-related deposit.

Second stop: Cerro Negro, Calasparra: Volcanic edifice representative of Neogene ultrapotassic volcanism.

Third stop: La Celia Mine: Lamproite with "jumillite" (a variety of apatite). Petrology and mineralogy. Visit to the mine.

Fourth stop: Hoya de la Sima, Jumilla: Paleontological site with vertebrate ichnites on brackish sediments (late Messinian - earliest Pliocene).

Fifth stop: Sierra de las Cabras: Paleontological site with ichnites of large vertebrates on lake sediments (late Messinian).

Sixth stop: Downtown Jumilla: Visit to the Natural Science and Ethnological Municipal Museum of Jumilla.

Last stop: Visit to a typical local wine cellar at Jumilla (optional, depending on time availability).

This field-trip is sponsored by the Jumilla Council.

Fees include: lunch and transportation. Excursion will finish at Caravaca by 18:30h.
