Short report to the 34th Session of the IGCP Scientific Board

Paris, 15-17 February, 2006

The Spanish National Committee (SNC) was constituted in 1975. On September 22 — 24, 2005, was held the Symposium "Geociencias, recursos y patrimonio geológicos ", as a contribution to the 30th Anniversary of the Spanish National Committee.

Six invited talks and 18 poster contributions where exposed and discussed. The Director of the Geological Survey of Hungary, Dr. Károly Brezsnyánszky, address the participants with an oral talk, titled:

Geología en un país de cambios: Hungría
Geology in a changing country: Hungary

Its contents have been published as a monography in the series 'Geología y Geofísica', Instituto Geológico y Minero de España, its full reference:

M. A. Lamolda (ed.) 2005. Geociencias, recursos y patrimonio geológicos. Geología y Geofísica, 3, 210 pp. IGME. Madrid.
(a copy of this monograph was mailed to the IGCP Secretariat).

The meeting was attended by 40 participants. Participants enjoyed two field-trips on September 24th, during the morning in the Barranco del Gredero both the K/T boundary and Paleocene/Eocene boundary sections were visited. In the afternoon were visited several archaeological localities nearby Caravaca, a classical pass between eastern and southern Spain before Roman Empire times.

During 2005 there was a total of 12 working groups, which have produced seven monographies. Most of them organised annual meetings, and attended their respective project international meeting. Since my last oral report to this Scientific Board, 2001, a total of 23 working groups have been active in Spain, it is the 28% of total IGCP project during those five years. Such a participation is noticeable as during three years we have no finantial support by the Spanish National Commission for UNESCO, only the Spanish Geological Survey (IGME) maintained its support.

The Spanish National Committee, IGCP, is a Scientific Sub-Commission of the National Commission on Geology, since January 31st 2005. This is a very important point as actually this committee has a formal status in the organization of the Spanish representative of the IUGS. This situation is improving the usual support of the Spanish Geological Survey to the committee and its working groups.

Since 1993 this committee policy has been focused on promoting Spanish Working Group (SWG) meetings in appropriate scenarios, I mean geological sciences congress, conferences, and so on. But, I strongly support annual international meetings of IGCP projects in Spain. Both ways, national and international scope, are successful to spread SWGs researches among our colleagues. The IGCP and its SNC become conspicuous in the Spanish geological community.

The SNC publish an annual newsletter "Boletín Informativo", whose issue, no. 30 has published in last January and mailed to members of the SWG, national geological research institutions, representative persons of other national committees, IGCP secretariat, members of the IGCP Scientific Board, etc. Furthermore, several monographies on general topic or on particular project topics have been published, too. The last one was devoted to the 30th Anniversary of the SNC contributions.

Since 1999 we maintain a web page of this committee. Its address: http://www.ugr.es/~mlamolda/PICG
it has an up-dated information about the SNC and its Working Group activities.

This committee will meet in late June or early July at Teruel, sponsored by Fundación Conjunto Paleontológico de Teruel, making emphasis on the Geological Heritage. Representatives of Spanish Geoparks have been invited, as well as other representatives of similar entities.

During my last attendance in 2001, I asked for improving more close colaborations between National Committees and project leaders, both during new project proposals and their subsequent developments. It has been made in a very few cases. In 2005 I received regular information from two or three project leaders, only.

New proposal should be sent in advance to those National Committee chairpersons whose countries would be especially involved in that project. It is important getting a balance between project activities and National Working Group inputs. Recently, the IGCP project no. 500 "Dryland Changes: past, present, future" has organised a work-shop in Lanzarote Island, Canary Islands, and neither the project leader nor the meeting organiser have contacted this chairman in such a topic which is very important to Spain. Furthermore, I have requested news about it and no answer from the organiser.

I suggest that the IGCP General Secretary asks to project leaders to sending regular information to National Committee chairpersons, especially those with a participation in the project and/or where activities will be organised.
