Project no. 369 'Peritethyan Rift Basins' (Dr. Ramón Salas)

Abstract:
During the last phase of the IGCP-369 Project the scientific activities of the Iberian Peninsula and Western Mediterranean Working Group have been focused on two end-products: i) a volume on "Peritethyan Rift/Wrench basins and Passive Margins" (edited by W. Cavazza, A. H. F. R. Robertson & P. A. Ziegler), which will be published as a Peri-Tethys Memoir (Éditions du Museum, Paris), and ii) a set of paleotectonics maps of the peritethyan domain. The first product summarises the study of four rift systems and passive margin: 1) evolution of the Mesozoic Central Iberian Rift System and its Cenozoic Inversion (Iberian Chain), 2) Mesozoic Intracratonic Inverted Pyrenean Basins, 3) the Northwestern Mediterranean Basin (Valencia Trough, Gulf of Lions and Provençal Basin): structure and geodynamic evolution, and 4) Evolution of the South Iberian Continental Margin. The development of the maps is also at an advanced stage. The complex integration of the local maps will require an extra year in 1999.

Project no. 379: 'Karst Proccess and Carbon Cycle' (Dr. Juan Carlos Cañaveras)

Abstract:
Activities of the Spanish Working Group have been focused on the assessment of CO2 balance in karst system, both in present time and paleo-environments, and the subsequent build-up of a model for the CO2 behaviour in the carbonate-water-air system. Microclimatic (in situ monitoring) hydrochemical, geochemical and petrological studies have been carried out in Holocene-recent karst systems and tufa deposits; likewise, petrological, geochemical and sedimentological studies have been carried out in paleokarst and relict karst systems. The study areas are located in karst systems located in the northern part of the Iberian Peninsula (Altamira and Tito Bustillo caves, and Sª Peñalara karst system), Miocene paleokarst (Madrid Basin, Calatayud Basin), relict karst systems in eastern Spain (Coto Pinoso, Alicante) and Holocene-recent tufa (carbonate) deposits in Central Spain (Lagunas de Ruidera). Partial results have been published and discussed during several national and international meetings and congress.

Project no. 396: 'Continental Shelves in the Quaternary' (Dr. Francisco J. Hernández)

Abstract:
This project about "Continental shelf during the Quaternary" has as main objective to coordinate studies on that topic world wide. The project try to reach a best knowledge about the stratigraphic record during the Quaternary on continental shelves, their interpretation, correlation and applications. Spanish Working Group was included in this project at the end of 1997. Activities carried out by some members of the Spanish Work Group have had a good acceptance in the international group; in fact, continuous relationship have been establish with the international coordinators. Spaniard members have taken part actively in the international meetings, both at Durhan (England, 1997) and at Goa (India, 1998). At present day, the activities which have been carried out by the Spanish Work Group are very dispersed, with many small groups belonging to various organizations and institutions, working on continental shelves and slopes. A national meeting was planed for September, 1998 - whose main objective was knowing different research groups working in Spain. Unfortunately, this meeting was not able to celebrate. The Spanish Work Group intends, for 1999, to have a national workshop to coordinate all groups. Besides, we have been brought out the possibility to publish a special volume on "The Record of the Quaternary on Continental shelves: their interpretation, correlation and applications", with contributions open to all Spanish Working Group members.

Project no. 410: 'The Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event' (Dr. Juan Carlos Gutiérrez Marco)

Abstract:
Main activities of the Spanish Working Group were focused on the taxonomical, paleobiological and evolutive research of some little known Ordovician faunas from the Iberian Peninsula, to which we have added several new species and one new genus. The main fossil groups subject of research, during this year, were the bivalve molluscs, echinoderms, brachiopods and conodonts. Besides these studies, we have done diverse analysis on biostratigraphy, biochronology, paleoecology and paleo-biogeography from some important Spanish Ordovician sections. Apart to the Hesperian Massif, aspects on biodiversity and biochronology of the Middle Ordovician from the Moroccan Anti-Atlas were entirely reviewed, in order to get a more accurate correlation and to reconstruct the faunal dynamics with regard to other areas within the North-Gondwanan domain.
