3. National participations in ongoing IGCP projects

Project no. 319 'Global Paleogeography of the Late Precambrian and Early Paleozoic' (Dr. Eladio Liñán)

Abstract:
The IGCP Project 319 underwent in 1996 its last scheduled year. Nevertheless, several complications following the death, last february, of one of the co-leaders (Dr. Kirill B. Seslavinsky) recomended to apply for an extended year to the Scientific Board of the I.G.C.P.; this request was presented in Paris last October. During this year 1996, the Spanish Working Group continued studies on Pre-cambrian and Cambrian successions of central, southern and northeastern Spain from palaeontological, palaeoecological, sedimentological and structural points of view. On the other hand, further research has been carried out on international biostratigraphic correlation and palaeobiogeographic analyses (using trilobites, archaeocyatha, acritarchs and trace fossils) for the Cambrian, which allow us to refine the palaeogeographic reconstructions of certain areas. The correlation of the Spanish Cambrian events with other perigondwanic and Baltic areas has been also subject of investigation. Finally, the Spanish Working Group is transforming the resulting facial and palaeogeographical maps to a digitalized version. The Fifth Annual Meeting (“Memorial of Dr. Kirill B. Seslavinsky”) was held in Ekaterinburg (Urals, Russia) from 25th July to 2nd August 1996, together with the “All-Russian Conference Palaeogeography of Vendian-Early Palaeozoic”. Over 30 delegates from 7 countries attended it. During the conference at Ekaterinburg it was decided to apply for one year extension for the project.

Project no. 336 'Intraplate Magmatism and Metallogeny' (Dr. Fernando Gervilla)

Abstract:
Since 1993, the scientific activities of the Spanish working group of the IGCP project 336 have been focused on Precambrian to Mesozoic basic and ultrabasic rocks hosting different degrees and types of mineralizations. The studied areas are located in: 1) Cordillera Frontal (Mendoza Province, Argentina) where occur Au-bearing Cu ores generated by lixiviation and subsequent re-concentration of primay disseminated ores during green-schist facies metamorphism, associated with the intrusion of granodiorite bodies; 2) Sierras Pampeanas (San Luis Province, Argentina) where there is a set of mafic-ultramafic bodies hosting magmatic, PGE-bearing Ni-Cu mineralizations, strongly removilized during or slightly after granulite-facies metamorphism; 3) the Almadén Syncline (Ciudad Real Province, Central Spain) where the largest mercury deposit in the world occurs associated to the alteration processes of palaeozoic, basic volcanic rocks of alkaline affinity; and 4) the External Zones of the Betic Cordillera (S Spain) where the Upper Triassic-Lower Jurassic basic magmatism shows a geochemical evolution form transitional (tholeitic-alkaline) magmas strongly modified by crustal contamination to typical alkaline magmas.

Project no. 345 'Andean Lithospheric Evolution' (Dr. Julio Saavedra)

Abstract:
Data about Early Paleozoic magmatism of Sierras Pampeanas (Andean Basement) have been studied from geochemical, petrological and metallogenic views, The epizonal pluton of Paiman (eastern Famatina) shows two types of magmatic rocks (basic and basic-intermediate and, mainly, acid compositions), with characteristics either of an evolved-arc or back-arc, within a magmatic arc system at an active subduction margin, with a volcanic island arc situated in the western part of Famatina. The Sierra de Los Llanos pluton (200 km SE Famatina) is a batholith of meta-aluminous granite associated to small bodies of cordieritic granite and metamorphic septa (that upgrade from weak to strong intensities), emplaced at low depth, representative of many plutons of Pampean Ranges for processes of interactions between mantellic and crustal materials. At Eastern Pampean Ranges, three events of regional metamorphism are recognized; the peak was reached under P= 5.7+/-0.4 Kb, T= 820+/-25ºC (M2, synchronous to the main regional deformation), with M3 temptatively assigned to the uplift of the previous thickened continental crust, 4+/-0.5 kb and T= 715+/-15ºC. Sm-Nd dating of fluorites enclosed in granitoids of this region suggests an age of 131+/-22 MA-117+/-26 Ma; hydrithermal fluids involved in the formation of fluorite were probably derived by mixing of two fluids, an ascending high Sr(87)/Sr(86) one, probably equilibrated with metamorphic basement and a second with a low Sr(87)/Sr(86).

Project no. 350 'Cretaceous Environmental Change in E & S Asia' (Dr. Marcos A. Lamolda)

Abstract:
During the last 4 years our working group has been collaborating with chinese colleagues from the China University of Geosciences, at Beijing. It should be remarked our common research at the Gamba area, S Tibet, where two section have been studied: their foraminiferal assemblages and the nature of the well worldwide known Late Cenomanian event, especially by comparisson of localities at both end of the Tethyan Realm. Studies on foraminiferal abundance and diversity, planktonic and benthonic forminifera ratios, and the ratio of keeled/non keeled planktonic foraminifera, allow us suggesting that the onset of bio-event, cited above, occurred during Late Rotalipora cushmani Zone, and continued during the Whiteinella archaeocretacea Zone. Benthic foraminifera assemblages draw several ecosystem phases: extinction, pioner faunas and recovery. These observations, at both end of the Tethyan Realm with different sedimentological setting, allow us to emphasize on the C/T transition, mainly as a global anoxic/disareobic event caused by primary productivity changes or organic matter retained in sediments. Those results were presented during two meetings: 1) at Tübingen, the Jost Wiedmann Symposium 'Cretaceous Stratigraphy, Paleobiology, and Paleobiogeography' where was presented the contribution: The response of foraminifera to oceanic environmental changes during the Cenomanian/Turonian transition at Gamba Zongshan Section, Southern Tibet, and 2) at Alcalá de Henares, 'El Programa Internacional de Correlación Geológica en España: principales aportaciones', IV Congreso Nacional de Geología, where was presented the contribution: Cambios ambientales cretácicos en Asia oriental y meridional: El paso Cenomaniense-Turoniense en el Tibet meridional.

Project no. 351 'Early Paleozoic Evolution in NW Gondwana' (Dr. Juan Carlos Gutiérrez-Marco)

Abstract:
The scientific activities of the Spanish working group of the IGCP Project 351 have been focused on Cambrian to Silurian biostratigraphy and palaeobiogeography of the Iberian Peninsula, and their relations with other North African, European and Southamerican countries throughout the perigondwanan margin. Precise correlations based on the development of high resolution biostratigraphic schemes have been achieved for the Iberian Silurian, together with the first evidences of several faunistic crises caused by global oceanographic and climatic changes. Ordovician records of diverse benthic and pelagic animals have been contributed to the reconstruction of faunal dynamics around Gondwana, as well as to the detection of some physical barriers preventing migrations, of great paleogeographical interest. These main results have been presented in 29 papers and symposia proceedings, as well as in several manuscripts submitted for publication during this year.

Project no. 362 'Tethyan and Boreal Cretaceous' (Dr. José Mª Pons)

Project no. 367 'Late Quaternary coastal records of rapid change' (Dr. Caridad Zazo)

Abstract:
The Spanish Working Group concentrates its studies making uses of different techniques and disciplines that serve to record rapid changes in coastline. So drillings, isotopic measurements, pollen analysis, palaeodirectons of winds, littoral currents, etc. are carefully studied. We put special emphasis on the last 6000 years, when the sea level reaches more or less its present position, with the aim of achieving short-time periodicities for some progradational/erosional coastal processes.

Project no. '376: Laurentian-Gondwanan connections' (Dr. Enrique Martínez-García)

Abstract:
Preliminary results of research carried out by the Spanish Working Group on the stratigraphic, igneous and tectonic evolution of the northern margin of Gondwana have resulted in proposing the extension of tectonostratigraphic terranes in Iberia and western Europe into northern Argentina during Precambrian and Early Paleozoic times. In October 1995 the Annual Meeting of IGCP Project 376 was held at Jujuy (Argentina), with field trips to the Puna and Northern Andes of Argentina and Chile with the purpose of studying the igneous and tectonic evolution of Precambrian and Early Paleozoic, with visits to different sections of the Cordillera Oriental and Salar de Atacama. Due to the celebrartion of the International Geological Congress at Pekin in 1996, the International Meeting of Project 376 was moved to February 1997, when it will be held in New Zealand. In June 1966, members of the Spanish Working Group of Project 376 met at the National Geology Congress of Spain which was held at Alcalá de Henares, presenting various communications. In 1997, the Annual Meeting of Project 376 will be held at Vila Real (Portugal) jointly organized by the Universities of Oviedo (Spain) and Tras-os-Montes Oriental (Portugal), with E. Martinez-García as President of Organizing Commitee. This meeting will occur jointly with the XIV Meeting on the Geology of Western Iberia, with pre- and post-Congress field trips, which will offer a modern view of the evolution of Prehercynian and Hercynian deformation episodes in NW Iberia, with a geotraverse between Oviedo (Spain) and Porto (Portugal).

Project no. '379: Karst Proccess and Carbon Cycle' (Dr. Juan Carlos Cañaveras)

Abstract:
The Spanish Working Group for IGCP 379 (Karst Processes and the Carbon Cycle) was recently formed (July, 1996). The activities were focused on in-situ monitoring of environmental parameters of on-going karst processes in different spanish caves and karst systems, in order to assess the contribution of carbonate rocks to the content of CO2 through karst processes under different geological and climatic environments. Field and laboratory works focused on neogene paleokarstic processes (Madrid and Calatayud Basins), on Holocene-recent tufa deposits (Guadiana and Júcar rivers) and on the evolution of Redondo karst (Palencia) were also carried out. Some of the obtained data were published in the Abstracts of the 30th IGC, IV Congreso Nacional de Geología and in the IGCP 379 Newsletters.
