Comisario de la Ventana a la Ciencia "Lo que el ojo no ve" en el Parque de las Ciencias de Granada (Noviembre 2008-Septiembre 2009). La Ventana de Ciencia en Vivo es un concepto de “espacio transparente” que forma parte de la nueva filosofía del Parque de las Ciencias. Es una forma directa de mostrar a los visitantes las líneas de investigación actuales y los trabajos reales de investigación e innovación. Con el nombre de “Lo que el ojo no ve”, el Departamento de Óptica de la Universidad de Granada abre una ventana a su actividad científica en el hall del Macroscopio, con el fin de mostrar al público algunas de sus líneas de investigación en el campo de la visión y el color. El Sistema Visual Humano posee unas características que lo hacen muy especial, pero tiene sus limitaciones. No vemos objetos muy pequeños, ni muy lejanos, ni detectamos el ultravioleta, ni percibimos la polarización, etc. La ciencia y la tecnología nos proporcionan instrumentos para ver lo que el ojo no es capaz y permiten el progreso en numerosos campos del conocimiento. Invited conference: "Optics and Magic" (4-April-2013): For many, many years, magicians have been pioneers in using scientific advances to stimulate the public’s imagination: chemical, physical and optical phenomena, hydraulic inventions and pyrotechnic effects, among many others. During this talk, we will analyze several optical phenomena that have been used in magic for centuries, are used in the present day and will continue to be used in the decades to come.
El Grado en Óptica y Optometría de la UGR (http://grados.ugr.es/optica) inicia, con esta conferencia, un ciclo de conferencias divulgativas sobre Óptica, Física y Visión, que pretenden poner de manifiesto la importancia de la competencia lingüística y recordar que los estudiantes de las universidades andaluzas deben acreditar un nivel B1 en el conocimiento de una lengua extranjera para obtener un título de Grado. La conferencia "Optics and Magic" la impartirá el profesor de Óptica de la UGR Javier Hernández Andrés en su doble vertiente de mago aficionado y especialista en Óptica.

Conferencia invitada: "Óptica y magia (en inglés)" (15-Abril-2013): A lo largo de la historia de la magia muchos principios científicos han sido utilizados por los magos para estimular el imaginario del público: fenómenos químicos, físicos y ópticos, inventos de hidráulica, efectos pirotécnicos, y muchos más. En esta charla se analizarán algunos fenómenos ópticos que se han empleado durante siglos en los espectáculos de magia, se siguen usando en la actualidad y se utilizarán en el futuro.

Master Erasmus-Mundus CIMET

• European Master Erasmus-Mundus "Color in Informatics and Media Technology" (CIMET): Four european institution (University of Granada (Spain), University of Eastern Finland (Finland), Gjovik University College (Norway) and University of Saint-Etienne (France)) gather their skills and knowledge in the fields of color vision, optics, image processing, phyics, instrumentation and computer science since September 2008.

• The study programme of this Master course is broadly interdisciplinary, encompassing photonics, computer vision and imaging science, computer science and multimedia technology as a mix of relevant theoretical and practical knowledge. The objective is to educate students in advanced methodologies and models in computationnal color science with two goals of research orientation and further studies at the doctoral level on one hand, and practical applications on the other hand. CIMET offers three areas of specialization: Color Imaging Science, Spectral Color Science and Multimedia Technology Science. These areas are being emergent, rapidly evolving, and of growing impact on the Information Society Technologies which require specialized competencies.

• The first semester is devoted to foundation courses necessary to students before beginning the two specializations they will follow. Foundation courses will be proposed in any university of the consortium. The first specialisation, in the second semester, will be devoted to compulsory courses in color imaging science necessary to students before beginning the second specialization. It will be done either in Granada or Saint Etienne. The second specialisation, in the third semester, will be done either in Joensuu or Gjøvik. Therefore, during the first three semesters, students will spend their Master Courses in either two universities or three universities. This arrangement leaves open the possibility to visit during the Master thesis period another university of the consortium which will not deliver a degree. During one of the first three semesters, students will have to follow courses on the culture and language of the visited country.

• Courses are taught in English and are structured according to the ECTS with 120 credits run over four semesters of full-time study. Students are awarded by a double (or multiple) degree, at postgraduate-level (Msc of Science, 300 ECTS), from the two (or three) degree-granting Universities visited. The CIMET programme is intended for top level non-EU and EU students with a fluent knowledge in spoken and written English (TOEFL 550). Thirty students are integrated each year in this program, with a professor/student ratio close to one. Admission is based on academic excellence. Applicants should have a BSc degree (i.e. 180 ECTS) in the European LMD system, or equivalent, in computer science, physics or mathematics.
