This section explains the importance of language learning strategies and presents an overall classification of them so that you can understand the internal relationship among them.

 

Language learning strategies are divided into:

 

Direct Strategies: they directly involve the target language. They all require the mental processing of the language, but the three groups of the direct strategies (memory, cognitive and compensation) do this processing differently and for different purposes.

 

 

Indirect Strategies: they support and manage language learning without directly involving the target language. They are useful in virtually all language learning situations and are applicable to all four language skills. (metacognitive, social, and affective)
