This tool analyses the text entered by the user offering the following
information:
-
Type/token ratio => Proportion of
tokens (i.e. total number of words in a text) and types (i.e. words which
are different in a text). The type/token ratio is also referred to as
lexical density (Carter, 1987).
For example, a text of 120 tokens, containing 78 types (different words), has a type/token
ratio of 65%. According to King and Flynn (2005), when the index is over 60%
the text is dense and shows a considerable degree of difficulty; between 50%
and 60% the difficulty is medium and below that the text can be considered as
not difficult.
- Lexical diversity => Given that the
type/token ratio is very much dependent on text length, ADA also offers the
"lexical diversity index", based on Yule's K characteristic (Yule, 1944,
cited in Oakes, 1998: 204), as it measures lexical richness regardless of text
length.>
- Frequency list of the
text => List
of the words the text contains, ordered by frequency, thus highlighting the keywords
in the extract.
