Edaphology, also known as Soil Science, is the science studying the soil. Meaning, following Keys to Soil Taxonomy (2006), that soil corresponds to: "The natural mean for plant growth. Soil covers the Earth surface continuously except on the bare rocks, on the perpetual ice or deep water, or on the glaciers ice. In that sense, soil depth is determined by root depth of plants.

Under this concept, soil is: A natural body formed by solids (minerals and organic matter), liquids and gas, that are upon Earth surface, occupy some space, and are characterized by one or both of the following: horizons or layers that are different from initial material inicial as a result of energy and/or matter addition, losses, transfers and transformations; or the ability to support plant roots in natural ambient.

The first name of Reasearch Group (EDAPHOLOGY), comes from the posibilities of studying a wide variety of soil aspects, related with its composition, properties, cropping use; and also an appropriate land use, which leads to the second term (LAND USE PLANNING), what justifies its areas of study and also leads to the main research lines of this RNM-101 group.
