Abstract

The plasma membrane (PM) H+- ATPase plays a central role in plant physiology. The H+ gradient generated by this enzyme controls two basic processes: intracellular and extracellular pH and active transport of nutrients across the plasmalemma, which in turn are responsible for cell growth. In this review, other physiological and biochemical aspects related with the PM H+-ATPase are discussed, such as the kinetic analysis and specific inhibitors of the ATPase activity, structure and mechanism of (E-P)ATPases, regulation of the H+ pump and evolutionary relation ships with other ATPases present in different biological membranes.
