Abstract

In this review we point out the different biomineralization processes. Organisms belonging to as many as 55 Phyla are believed to be involved into these processes. We comment on the different mechanisms used: Biologically Induced Mineralization and Biologically Controlled Mineralization. Special remark is made on those biomineralization processes where the role of microorganisms is important, both from a biogeomicrobial and clinical point of view. Finally, we approach the molecular processes, by which bacteria are able to privide heterogeneous crystallization nuclei.
