Influence of treatment period on the effect of As-Cr interaction on plasma glucose and cholesterol levels

Abstract

The influence of treatment period on the effect of As-Cr on plasma glucose and cholesterol levels has been studied. Growing Wistar rats have been dosed with 5g/g foof of As (As₂O₅) and/or Cr(CrCl₃), for two periods of time, 6 and 12 weeks. The results show that As-Cr interaction has not significant effect on glucose levels at two periods:96.61 vs 98.76 y 99.66 vs 100.01, respectively) Howewer, Cr administration compensates the effect produced by As on cholesterol levels in all the cases. After 12 weeks of treatment the As produces a toxic action and the plasma cholesterol levels are twice higher that the control group.
