13-25 March 2009. Workshop "Subduction Zones of the Caribbean", associated Field Trip "Subduction and arc complexes of central Cuba",
and pre-Congress Course "Metamorphic Petrology as a Geodynamic Tool"
Workshop "Subduction Zones of the Caribbean". Dedicated to the memory of Professor Wayne Jolly, who passed away on February 9, 2008, and greatly contributed to the Geology and Petrology of volcanic arc rocks of the northeast Antilles.
GENERAL
The Workshop "Suduction Zones of the Caribbean" seeks to unravel the complex geologic evolution of the Caribbean region focusing on deep earth processes taking place at ancient and active convergent plate margins. The main aim of the Workshop is the systematic characterization and comparison of subduction products, both mechanical and thermal, such as high-pressure belts, tectonic mélanges, accretionary wedges, accreted terranes, volcanic arcs, and fracture zones all along the Caribbean realm, northern South America and Nuclear Central America.

The present Central American and Antillean subduction zones, and remnants of subducted Mesozoic and Tertiary materials accreted in Caribbean suture zones record an unusually broad range in time, rates, thermal regimes, and compositions. Placing these in an actualistic model that accounts for the current configuration of the Caribbean plate is an ongoing effort. We invite contributions from all fields of geophysics, geochemistry and geology applied to convergent tectonics and geodynamics of the Caribbean. Field-based, geochemical or petrologic studies of sutures and subductions mélanges are welcome. We especially encourage contributions establishing links, contrasts and correlations among active and ancient subduction zones in the Caribbean area.ABSTRACT SUBMISSION
Abstracts (in English or Spanish) shall be submitted ready for publication in electronic format (.rtf .doc). Abstracts should have between 250 and 450 words and may include an inserted figure in gif format optimized for the web. The size of the abstract, including text and/or figure, should not exceed an 8.5 " x 11" (21,59 x 27,94 cm) page. The margins should be one inch. No corrections will be introduced to the abstracts. The text shall be written with font type ARIAL, Size10, justify alignment, single spaced lines. The names of the authors in upper and lower case. Underline the name of the author who will present the paper. The name of the institutions in upper and lower case should include the address and electronic mail. Leave one line blank between the institution list and the main text of the abstract, as well as between the title and the author list.

Funds provided by IUGS-UNESCO to IGCP 546 (ca. 4000 USD) will be used to help cover the expenses of the attendants to the workshop and associated field trip. However, because we will probably not have had received funding from IUGS-UNESCO by March 2009, we will probably not have the chance to support attendance in advance. Anyway, we shall send funds after the meeting. Contact Antonio García-Casco for application.
