Educating by Standards? Controversies and Challenges in Policy and Practice
Coordinator: Andrea Maccarini, University of Padua, Italy Processes of standardization are a mainstay of education policy and practice both at the national and international level, and they could be seen as a major feature of a global educational agenda. The symposium proposed by the Italian Association of Sociology will focus on the idea that such processes are relationally contested, and on the paradoxes, controversies, and opportunities they bring about.
The debate will revolve around a few crucial themes, such as the standardized assessment, and the related trend towards the calculability and measurability of educational practices that are made possible by the ‘big data’ approach and by the spread of the new ICT in education.
